Zyrnyn wrote:It is certainly better than outright free market capitalism. But as far as being leftwing it is complicated I think. On the one hand social democrats are well intentioned but still put faith in reforming the unredeemable system of capitalism. They have historically not had the backbone to stand alongside revolutionary movements, but a counter to this point is that at least in 1930's Germany, they had been alienated from the left by the Stalinists. My question to this would be without the Stalinist tendency of "social fascism" would the social democrats have backed the communists and put up a united front? Overall I believe that social democracy is an attempt to ride in the middle by appeasing both sides and maintaining capitalist status quo, as someone who was briefly a social democrat I will say that they can be radicalized even if over time. Social Democrat -> Democratic Socialist -> Leftist (of any striping) as I typed all this I realize I did not necessarily give a good answer, was just trying to provide insight with my opinion hope it helped understand it a little bit :)

My concern of SocDems is where I go back and forth on whether they are a launchpad of radicalization or do they decriminalized and placate? I mean just look at the Scandinavian countries.

Why or why not ?

I’m not a social democrat myself, but I think the left can learn a lot from them. They’re the only even vaguely left-leaning movement that has gained influence in democratic countries (outside of Latin America, that is) and they’ve been able to implement a number of genuinely beneficial policies, even if they pale in comparison to the proposals of the real left. Why? Because they present themselves as moderate, willing to compromise, and above all, they participate in parliamentary politics. I think the left can and should adopt many of the tactics used by SocDems to gain influence, and then should use that platform to implement real socialist policies.

The Beatified Building Brickface of Borf Brigades

I think abandoning ones principles for pointless political capital is a waste of power. Especially when it advances coercive, exploitative economics that undermine humanity's quality of life and our access to the commons. Scandinavia's Nordic Model seems prosperous on the surface because it benefits from parasitic imperialism that perpetuates poverty in the third world.

Remember that it was the social democrats that continued to fund and advocate for the imperialist war in World War I, causing the schism with Rosa Luxemburg and Karl liebknecht. To make matters worse, the Minister of Defense at the time, a social democrat by the name of Gustav Noske, brutally crushed the workers uprising that culminated with the proclamation of the Free Socialist Republic but collapsed soon after due to the betrayal of the social democrats. At the end of the day, social democrats will always take the side of capital because they stand to lose with the abolishment of capitalism and would rather incrementally reform it.

I used to believe this but when the ruling powers allow it you must question if it truly is a threat to their power or more useful to them?

Part of me wonders and will research if their were mid grounders during the bourgeois revolutions.
