The Empire of Westbeech

Journal of [REDACTED], Corporal. 326th Regulars

Day 9: I have been on the front for only a couple of days. On occasion there is a bombardment on either side. Yes, this seems like trench warfare, but we don't have trenches. Whenever we engage, it quickly turns into attempting to outflank each other, which always end in a stalemate. I still remember just barely dodging one of the vehicles they commandeered from a civilian. They don't seem to be able to supply themselves with everything they need for an offensive.

Day 10: I was told we were going to launch an offensive on another front. They are hoping to drop special forces behind Northern lines and gather supporters of our dictator to spread support of our dictator throughout the North. I also heard that it was going to be the first official usage of a new weapon. I don't know what we should expect from this. I don't have special forces training, but I think they would be more effective being used on our front lines to break the lines of the poorly-trained areas of the Northern defenses. Since the officers and dictator support it, then it must be right.

Day 11: Today our unit is going to attempt to secure the town in front of us. It has been contested for weeks from what I've heard. If we capture it, we should get some great benefits from the capture. Maybe we'll even get a transfer to another front with more larger-unit action.

The town remained contested, finally falling to the South three days later.

The Ecclesiastical Meritocracy of Spiritual Republic of Caryton

Dorothy Shirleyton to make a full recovery, returns home for one week recovery vacation

Some time ago, the Leading Reverend Dorothy Shirleyton suffered a POTS attack and had to be transferred to emergency care. Little had come out into the media about the leader's help, but each nation who wished the aging leader well would be personally thanked in a hand-written letter by Kyle Johnson, the Asst. Leading Reverend who was made to temporarily step in during this period.

Today, Dorothy was received by a round of dignified applause as she was escorted down the front steps of the Georgine Central Hospital, her typical church robes exchanged for a more humble strawberry-colored dress. She hobbled down the steps with her wooden cane, and waved to the crowds politely. Although the Leading Reverend was obviously in a somewhat weakened and tired state, it brought a tide of relief in comparison to the scene of a stretcher and a breathing bag.

Dorothy Shirleyton would announce- in writing- that she would be taking a one week vacation to rest and prepare for the work that she had missed out on. This event did bring up the silent inevitable. As the world's oldest head of state, Dorothy Shirleyton would not have a lot of time left. The position of Leading Reverend is one for life, and it is a common consensus that somebody of Dorothy's humble personality would consider an end to her reign in the near future.

A public statement from Bernice Shirleyton (the leader's granddaughter) would set this hypothesis in stone. In front of a delicate pond surrounded by rose bushes, the poofy-haired blonde would speak for the press, her floral blazer untouched by the dignity of the words she had to say:

"Dorothy's said to us (the family) on numerous occasions that she does not want to rule until she dies. Retirement has always been the taboo second option in the home, but she feels as if she's got an obligation to see Caryton through it's first phase of existence, to get it to a place where it can survive but not be tainted by the outside. She feels that she's got an obligation to make sure life in the Spiritual Republic is feasible in the long-term before she considers spending her golden years for anything else. I wager by the end of 2021, the merit examination will choose another leader, and Dorothy will return to civilian life or come home to see Jesus in eternal life. She is a very hard-working woman."

A longer official statement would serve to inform and properly thank the nations of Artarum, Westbeech, and Zhongwangguo for their well-wishes and patience.

Sanctuary Point wrote:Major Black nodded as he took in her words, hiding his minor disappointment that he couldn’t convince her not to take on the habit but she seemed set on it. “Alright I guess I’ll have to talk with Cardinal Fiery Fervour after prayers.” He started walking towards the tolling bells again. “Better get going. Being late for service will do you no favours in convincing the Cardinal to let you in to the ministorum.”

If Pearlescent noticed Black's disappointment, she didn't show it as she hurried after him. Shield Wall followed her faithfully, though he stopped briefly to look back, as if he had heard something. Deciding it was nothing, he continued to follow the other two Ponies.

In an isolated storage building at the outskirts of the town, something broke through the floor. It looked quickly around to confirm that the room was indeed empty, then pulled itself fully from the hole it had made. Another creature emerged moments later, then another. Working quickly, they pulled up several large boxes from their underground tunnel, opened them and began assembling something. It would take hours to fully assemble the device, but it began to quickly take shape: it was large, spherical and contained both magical and technological parts. The creatures didn't really know (and couldn't really know) how it worked, but they had been instructed on how to operate it.

Sanctuary Point wrote:As their group got closer, they could see that much dedication had got into the construction of the schola. Statues were set in niches all along the front of the building, each depicting a famed soldier from their past in sculpted cloud with the exception of the pair that loomed over the entrance. The Sisters Divine stood beside one another, clad in their armour from the Great Crusade with their outer wings extended and gazes turned outward. Silvered Luna watched the west, Nightbringer, her great maul resting over her shoulder while Golden Celestia looked east with Solar Tear planted into and stabbing through the overhang.

Landing on the steel platform and taking a few steps to reach the metal awning, they could see a fully pegasi Nearós squad knelt before the blade and speaking in Elysian, wings spread in imitation of the statue above. Before Rainbow could ask about it, the foals finished their hymn and disappeared inside with Alula and her hetairoi replacing them. “With Your Fury, strike down the Enemy Within. With Your Wrath, strike down the Enemy Without. With Your Light, strike down the Enemy Beyond and with Your Grace, shield us from harm. Exypiretoúme tis Theíes Adelfés.” They too spread their wings before standing again. “You are our guests so you are not required to recite the Hymn of Battle. Shall we enter?” Their guide gestured to the doors behind the blade.

Rainbow nodded.

"After you, General," she said and followed Alula.

Just before they entered the Schola, of the Equestrian soldiers spoke, "If I may ask, what was the language you were speaking? We've heard it a few times before around the city, but it isn't familiar to me. You're a multi planet empire... Was that the language of your homeworld?"

Heinry Hemmlin, the head of the guard, stood up holding a paper passed to her by a lieutenant. "The Vespergalian garrison has gotten bogged down. There are reports that there could be a group tampering with some of the equipment. Their arrival may be delayed indefinitely. We might run out of options soon enough. Without sufficient numbers to maintain a front line in East, we may have to withdraw from Pubsberg. The good news is that the enemy appears to be lessening their numbers in the far East out of fear of naval bombardment. More numbers report that the skirmishes that are ongoing are ending in our favor, but the worry for us is that we are waiting for the enemy to launch a massive offensive which could begin any day. With reinforcements coming to both of our lines, I wouldn't be surprised if they struck immediately upon the organization of another army group. Miss Korban, I believe it should be time to deploy special forces to disrupt their organization."

Lilie nodded. She pointed to the area between Yuhnosberg and Broodheim. "Deploy them from the air utilizing our new aerial transport. Make sure that the operation is carried out at night. They will operate between the two cities and ambush enemy troops while also rallying supporters of the true Westbeech. Have them establish headquarters in an area that supports us and make sure they are not found. The second the enemy realizes we deployed an entire battalion behind their lines..."

The Diarchal Expedition Enclave of Sanctuary Point

Manehatten, Diarchal Embassy

The scratching of her quill was the only thing Lyra could hear as she poured over the papers in front of her. The few ships that had survived the transition reported an uptake in non-equine activity outside the borders of Equestria and as the head of Ordo Xenos, she had to read each movement and assign an appropriate response. While she did have other agents who she could have easily dumped this tedious filing onto, they were all occupied with gathering intelligence on their new neighbours. Footsteps outside her door pulled her attention away from Captain Void Arc’s incredibly dry writing style. No-one else was meant to be in the building now, Luna’s moon being high in the sky out her window.

Lyra’s door creaked open and the muzzle of her pistol poked out from the crack followed by her own a second later. Golden light shone around the handle of her gun and the tip of her horn as she stepped out of her office and onto the top floor of the embassy, her magic an oasis in the blackness. “Is someone there?” She asked, only an echo answering back as she crept out further into the dark. “I’m warning you, I’m armed.” The unicorn swept her surrounding with her weapon as she searched for the possible intruder, a flex of her ear activating the commbead. “Captain, there is an intruder on the premises. Be on alert.” No confirmation came though which Lyra found concerning. “Captain? Report in.” Only static answered her as she continued her sweep of the floor, pistol floating nearby.

Bereft of assistance by the strange quiet of the embassy guards, the Inquisitor circled back around the staircase, intent on retrieving her heavier equipment from her office. Clouds passed over the moon, plunging the building further into darkness as she picked up her pace. Everything outside her little orb of light seemed to disappear, leaving Lyra to find her way back to her office purely by recollection. Voices came out of the void, whispering heretical things into the mare’s ears as she started to feel something unfamiliar well up inside her. Was this fear? She thought that emotion culled after decades fighting the horrors of the Changelings and yet here it returned, spiking her heart rate and quickening her breath. The sight of her office door saw some of the fear banished only for it to burst open and a shadowy figure knock her to the ground.

Lyra groaned as she laid on the ground, her spell having ended when her focus broke and leaving her unable to even see her muzzle. A presence loomed over her as the intruder pinned her down, their hot breath making her ear flicker. “Going somewhere, Lyra?” The words held a threatening undercurrent that sent her heart racing. “Duke Silver? What is the meaning of this?” She asked as her horn began to shine again, casting light not on to the alluring figure of the Equestrian noble but a withered husk with daggers for teeth. “The meaning is that your soul is mine and I’ve come to collect.” The monster laughed as Lyra attempted to rebuke it, her voice hitching in her throat as the yellowed fangs descended upon her.

———

Her head snapped back as her magic pulled her weapon out from its holster, ready to blast the daemon as Lyra panted heavily. Her coat was matted with cold sweat as she found herself back in her office, the clock chiming for noon as Celestia’s welcoming sun streamed through her window. Still breathing heavily, she slowly return her pistol to her chest as she noticed the large puddle of drool on her desk. “A nightmare, nothing more.” She told herself, trying to convince herself that there was no deeper meaning behind what she saw.

The ground breaking set off an alarm in the closest guardhouse. While it was known that the Diamond Dogs here were not quite the savage and opportunistic raiders they were back in their own reality, the Diarchal ponies kept a watchful eye on the canines and that included seismic monitors around the edges of patrol routes to catch possible underground incursions. With the sensor tripped, the local detachment of the Guard sent out two squads to investigate the disturbance and like with any other potential threat, they were loaded for bear. An armoured carrier rolled towards the group of storage building, the ponies within wearing ceramic plate vests and armed with a mix of lasrifles and shotguns.

“Elysian, yes. It is the language of the Pegasopolis sector and its worlds. It developed, like so many others, during the Great Dark Age when the nascent United Equine Alliance was shattered by a great warp storm.” Alula lead them inside, skirting around an intricate diorama of two great armies of Pegasi in what looked a lot like Cloudsdale to Rainbow and the Equestrians. “What I am using to speak to you is referred to as Common, this language was crafted by the Divine Sisters Themselves to be easily learned by any equine of the Diaspora.” Alula explained as they walked further in, passing two saluting guards to fly up a shaft leading to catwalks that gave them a view over a number of classes.

The Empire of Artarum

Prime Minister's Office
Liudan, Artarum

"Mr Prime Minister."

The entire cabinet had been assembled in the yearly meeting, usually held somewhere towards the end of February, to evaluate the situation of the country. It was, in a way, akin to a state of the nation meeting, albeit one without the chief executive delivering a speech to the nation. As Lambert Faulkner walked to the head of the table, he motioned for his cabinet to be seated, which they obliged. While he maintained friendly relations with most of them, he was also a firm believer in professionalism, owing to his career in the Imperial Service.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Here we are. Shall we begin with Ms Prater? Ms Prater, if you will." He nodded towards the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Elizabeth Prater, who was commonly regarded as Lambert Faulkner's right-hand person.

"Of course, sir. During this last year, we have reported a GDP growth of 1.1%, which is an approximate increase of ninety billion pounds or so. As institutional frameworks with other countries, such as Umbraen and Zhongwangguo develop, we expect to see an increase in economic growth over the years. Even though there is no international framework to regulate trade and finance, the effects of increased trust and co-operation are spilling over into the economics, increasing economic activity. However, inflation—rather, in our case, deflation—remains a problem. As we stand, inflation rates are -1.2%, which is having a negative effect on our economy. I should state, Prime Minister, that we need to take swift and decisive action to increase our inflation rates. Otherwise, we will risk spiraling into a deflation trap, which could hamstring our economy for some years, at best.

We have, of course, come up with some policy ideas for your approval. The Imperial Bank is expected to decrease interest rates in the following weeks, but that will not be enough. While we cannot legally force the Imperial Bank to enact any sort of policy, I will meet with Governor Graves to advise him to engage in quantitative easing. This is not a fully-fledged economic crisis just yet, therefore, we do not believe that we will need to pump excessive amounts of money into the economy. I can estimate somewhere around the ballpark of £200 billion of a cash injection, but the precise details will need to be decided and reported by Governor Graves," she finished, eliciting a sigh of relief from Faulkner. He had begun to fear that the bill of saving the economy before it went into a death spiral would be too high, but the number said by Prater was manageable.

"Very well. I see we are starting off to a good, optimistic start," Faulkner joked, with several people snickering. He looked at Matthew Herzog, the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary. "Mr Herzog?"

"Yes, sir. The foreign sphere is cautiously optimistic for the time being," he began, "with the situation in The eurasian steppes being relatively stable, though I should like to underline 'relatively'. We are engaged in peace talks with Artzharut in order to finalise a peace treaty. The passing of Amnon Shelef has, admittedly, made the process far more smoother than we expected it to be." He smoothly and elegantly avoided mentioning his involvement in Amnon Shelef's assassination. "State President Galit Halevy has been quite willing to compromise and come to a mutual understanding with us. They are, however, not specifying when they will hold their elections, and the opposition parties—HaAvoda, Kadima, Mahat, Mapam, and Malat; I'll refer to them simply as 'Alignment' as they have banded under that name—are not talking to us. We believe that this is because they fear retribution by Ms Halevy should she suspect foreign intervention, and yes, Mr Prime Minister, that sounds as ludicrous to me as it does to you. However, we do not have any other theories as to why the Alignment is not engaging in dialogue with us. That said, a power transition from Ms Halevy is highly unlikely in the near future, and it is our belief that continuing to support Ms Halevy's government as well as the Makal party is more beneficial for our long-term interests. Instead of upsetting the status-quo, encouraging Ms Halevy to open and liberalise the regime is a more prudent and practical course of action, from the view of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

On the other hand, the succession crisis which Spiritual Republic of Caryton was going to experience appears to have been delayed," Herzog continued, shuffling a few papers, "because their leader was discharged from hospital. However, considering her age and overall fragility, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is preparing for an eventuality of a sudden change in leadership regardless. The fronts regarding Umbræn and China are calm, sir, thankfully, and our relations are only getting better and better. I believe that is all I have to report for the time being."

"Good, good. Then, I suppose I can move onto Mr Sharpe and Mr Verwoerd. Gentlemen?" He addressed Michael Sharpe, the Home Secretary, as well as Pieter Verwoerd, the Homeland Security Minister, at the same time, as they had somewhat overlapping jobs and could report together. Sharpe looked at Verwoerd, who nodded for him to begin.

"Sir. On the home front, as far as the Home Office is concerned, there is relative calm. Crime is at understandable and manageable levels, while organised crime is on the decrease, owing to the centralisation of policing in the Empire. Corruption has been curbed massively, while we are still working on police reform and brutality, with certain amounts of success. However, there is an issue of Boer-related white supremacist terror organisations that we are working together with the Ministry of Homeland Security on," he said, gesturing towards Verwoerd, "the details of which Mr Verwoerd will relay to you."

Verwoerd cleared his throat. "Thank you, Mr Sharpe. We ended 2020 tracking two specific organisations, codenamed Condor and Oxide, which have been identified to be positioned to cause some harm to the liberal democratic regime established in Bergsehuis after the disestablishment of apartheid. Both Condor and Oxide are positioning themselves against the black majority rule, with the former eager to bring it under Artarumen rule once more, while the latter seeks to re-establish white minority rule and apartheid in Bergsehuis. Ordinarily, they would fall within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, but as they operate primarily within Artarumen borders, it falls to us to keep tabs on them. For the time being, they have not engaged in actions that would enable us to legally label them as terrorist organisations. Therefore, our options are quite limited, and we can only utilise means of observation which do not require approval by the Ministry of Justice, courts, or both. That was all, sir."

"Speaking of justice," Faulkner nodded, "Mr Matthias?" That was Karl Matthias, the Justice Minister.

"Sir. Nothing extraordinary in the Ministry of Justice. We have a slight backlog of cases owing to decreased budgets for 2021, but I believe we can manage for the time being. Cases relating to private business affairs have increased, which we believe is a consequence of increased trading activity with foreign nations. Otherwise, we are working in tandem with the Home Office and the Ministry of Homeland Security to handle Condor and Oxide, and are familiar with the situation. They have informed us regarding their investigations, and keep us regularly updated with developments as they come." Matthias' briefing was quite succinct, the man nodding to Faulkner when done.

"Good, good. Mr Vorster, if you will?" Schalk Vorster was the Defence Minister, and he was one of the members of Faulkner's inner circle. Despite this, he still needed to report.

"Prime Minister. I believe that the primary issue I will touch upon is Talarus," he began in his calm, baritone voice, "because while I am in agreement with Mr Herzog over the stability of the situation in Talarus, it is the belief of the Ministry of Defence that extra precautions need to be taken. These precautions are not in terms of additional military deployment—we have adequate troops—but rather of a political nature. Currently, we are engaging Reykh forces through airstrikes with no ground troops deployed, for the time being, while the Admiralty has your authorisation to deploy ground troops, namely the Imperial Marines, should they deem it necessary to do so. However, we have not engaged with the left-wing factions, and we are aware that they may be biding their time to launch an attack upon the Democratic Rushen Federation when they believe that their strength has been reasonably decreased.

Therefore, I suggest that contingency plans be drawn up to facilitate the establishment of a Rushen government-in-exile, should we fail to hold the Democratic Rushen Federation. This was also suggested by Mr Herzog, I should say, albeit the Ministry of Defence would be handling the more practical issue of evacuating the designated government should the Rushen government understand the situation and agree with our contingency plan. Aside from that, the Ministry of Defence has nothing more to report that is crucial, Mr Prime Minister."

"Very well. Mr Herzog and Mr Vorster, please see to it that these contingency plans are drawn up and relayed in detail to the Rushen government," he instructed, with "Rushen government" clearly meaning "Democratic Rushen Federation" in ordinary Artarumen talk, "and please take care that these plans are not leaked to the press, or God forbid, the other factions in the war. Anyway, who do we have next? Ah, yes, Ms Mordaunt, if you will?"

Susan Mordaunt, the Education Secretary, began to talk. The large cabinet meeting would go on into the night, the entire state of the empire being reviewed by the government, charting a course for the next year ahead. More precise instructions, orders, and guidelines could of course be given in smaller meetings, but Faulkner believed that it was important for the entirety of the government to have an all-encompassing, holistic view of the direction Artarum was going in.
