Um, I always try to be optimistic about the future. I mean, although I have COVID but I am quite better off than those living in harsh poverty. I try to remind all those people around me that there is no need to be sad because you are living in really better conditions than those living in harsh poverty in Africa and Asia and many other places. But, they also survive. They also think. We, the average social media user and gamer, should be happy that we are getting these amenities.

Using those comparisons to those in the developed world doesn't really work. While it's true that one who is not living in extreme poverty is likely to have a batter life than someone who is, because most of us haven't been in that situation, we cannot accurately imagine it. You would do better using a reference applicable to the person in question.

We all know how people in sub-Saharan and Saharan Africa live their lives and how harsh their lives are. There is no division on Earth like developed and un-developed world. We all live on the same Earth. Breathe the same air, drink the same water. The whole world is interdependent. Try to understand that. My logic stands.

And, if you were in rural or even suburban India. You would have seen the same thing.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm trying to say that telling a 24-year-old that they shouldn't worry so much about their student loan because at least they've got a job working at Wal-Mart and a roof over their head because they're not starving to death in a village in rural Burundi since a swarm of locusts destroyed your only crops doesn't really work. Said 24-year-old has no experience with that level of hardship and while they're familiar with the images, their inability to completely visualise that struggle is impossible for them to do. While we should never take our lives for granted and forget the struggle of those in poverty, using comparisons like my example above only comes off as self-righteous, imo.

It seems that I have half-understood your statement. But, as far as I understand, I agree with you. Have a look at some of lines in one of my poems.

"When you are happy, you are living,
When you are sad, you are dying,
Just remember my friends,
Life isn't petrifying."

On the other hand, if people like us - the presumably top 10% of the world or so - feel sad about our lives and such, doesn't that mean people at the bottom feel even worse? I mean, I don't see it a point of optimism that 37 million people die of starvation or starvation related causes every year. I just find it impossible to be happy over the fact that billions of people live in abject poverty (particularly by Western standards), that there are still those who die of illnesses like tuberculosis and cholera and that there are more slaves at this point in history than in any other.

I know what you're trying to say, of course, but I find it impossible to be happier knowing that the world is a much worse place than we were taught. In fact, all those things are the reason my political views are what they are - but that's an entirely different conversation. What I'm saying is that you can't really expect people to be happy over it, no? That their miserable - to them - lives are some of the best in the world.

Every time someone says to me, "Oh, you're fortunate because of children in Africa or whatever.", all I can think is that their lives must be horrible and that something must be done to fix it. I know it sounds like I'm rambling, but all I'm saying in the end is saying that just makes people more sad, or at least that's what I feel when I get it.

Yes, you are right there. But, you know, it's sad that we don't do anything about the poor. I will not say that we can't. We can, but no one does. That's really sad. But, you know, we should be happy that we are here in our safe homes, typing in phones and PCs. But, you know, I really can't get why I should be sad.

You can be happy for yourself whilst still caring about those who have it worse than you. My outlook in life is to try and find the best in the world while still caring about the worst.

My brother, back when he had glasses (they were temporary to treat astigmatism), always broke them for some reason. I never understood why.

Also, I don't know why, but I love the look of glasses. I'd opt for them over contacts if I ever had eye problems.

I do agree, we need to make life better for the people who are in an unfortunate position looking at it from a first world perspective. The thing is, most people in western society are guilty of this - me included. Some don't know, don't care or don't know to what extent the situation is, while some of us never quite take action for one reason or another.

The interesting thing is, some people live in extreme poverty in developing countries, yet know no different. When I visited South Africa a few years ago, I saw people who lived in the townships in cape town and were more cheerful and happy than most people here in the UK.

Glasses are all well and good until you’re on a train during a global pandemic and have to wear a mask and can barely see anything because your glasses steam up every time you exhale.

Yeah...my grandparents lived (not sure if they still live there) in metal tin slums back from the country where we immigrated from, no hot water, damp walls and rats. They don't seem to mind, but I think I definitely did.

One of my closest friends and I went to a big amusement park for a class trip, and for the two years we went, both times his glasses got smashed in the side of the roller coaster, because he didn’t want them to fly off his face.

Yeah, I tried wearing glasses before. They always steamed up.

I mean, I did consider getting those glasses that stop blue light, but eh...
