Abraham Lincoln's Birthday

Sure, we know Abraham Lincoln was a U.S. president (the 16th, to be precise). Maybe we remember something about the Emancipation Proclamation or the Gettysburg Address. But did you know that he was born to illiterate parents? Or that he discovered his knack for easy conversation while working in a general store? Come along as we take a look back at some remarkable moments in the life of Abraham Lincoln on his February 12 birthday.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY TIMELINE
February 12, 1809
A future U.S. president is born

Abraham Lincoln was born to essentially illiterate parents in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky.

1831
Life as a young man

Lincoln left home at age 22, moving his way up from working as a laborer, to a store owner.

1858
Senate race & Lincoln-Douglas debates

Lincoln participated in several election debates on the subject of slavery, speaking out passionately in favor of abolition.

1863
Turmoil and hope

Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, which began to change the goal of the Civil War from saving the Union to abolishing slavery.

April 15, 1865
Assassination

Following getting shot by confederate sympathizer John Wilkes, Lincoln remained unconscious for nine hours and died the next morning.

HOW TO CELEBRATE ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY
Wear a hat

Lincoln's look had several iconic features, ranging from his lofty 6'4" height, to his beard, and of course, his stovepipe hat. We're not suggesting you adopt a stovepipe style (even if you could find one), but it's easy to get in the spirit of celebration with any old-fashioned hat.

Build something with Lincoln Logs
Fun fact: Lincoln Logs, although undoubtedly inspired by the story of the president growing up in a one-room log cabin, were actually invented by John Lloyd Wright, son of legendary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. They're still being manufactured today; if you have a set, dust them off and build your own masterpiece to celebrate the humble beginning of Lincoln's American dream.

Consider a beard
Did you know Lincoln was the first president to wear a beard while in office? If you're so inclined, plan ahead so your new beard can make a respectable showing by the time Lincoln's birthday comes around — or just skip shaving on the day. (Ladies, since it's unlikely you will be able to join in this particular form of celebration, perhaps you could encourage your male friends.)

5 THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT LINCOLN
His mother died young

Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, died at the age of 34 from tremetol (milk sickness) when he was only nine.

His parents were uneducated
Lincoln's parents were nearly illiterate, including his stepmother — who encouraged young Abraham to learn to read — which he largely accomplished on his own.

Lincoln was largely self-educated
Any formal education Lincoln received during his childhood likely added up to 18 months at most; he later taught himself the law and passed the Illinois state bar exam.

Lincoln's family members were "squatters" at one time
A land dispute in 1817 forced the Lincoln family from their Kentucky home; they found themselves "squatting" on a small piece of land in Indiana, which Lincoln's father eventually purchased.

He had a rocky relationship with Mary Todd
They got engaged in 1840, broke up a year later, reunited at a social function, and eventually married in 1842.

Chinese New Year

If you feel the ground trembling beneath your feet on February 12 — don’t fear! It’s simply the beginning of the Chinese New Year. You’ll find a full 20% of the Earth’s population celebrating — using more fireworks than any other day of the year. It’s a celebration marked by good food, red envelopes, and blessings for everyone.

WHEN IS CHINESE NEW YEAR 2021?
Chinese New Year, or Lunar New Year, is a 15-day festival that is celebrated annually depending on the sighting of the new moon. The occasion is also known as the Spring Festival, and an animal is associated with each New Year. The animals rotate and repeat according to a fixed cycle.

HISTORY OF CHINESE NEW YEAR
Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between January 21 and and February 20. It’s a major holiday in Greater China and has strongly influenced lunar new year celebrations of China’s neighboring cultures, including the Korean New Year, the Tết of Vietnam, and the Losar of Tibet. It is also celebrated worldwide in regions and countries with significant Chinese populations, like Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, North America, and Europe.

In 1928, the Kuomintang party decreed that Chinese New Year will fall on the first of January, following the Gregorian Calendar, but this was abandoned due to overwhelming opposition from the populace. In 1967 during the Cultural Revolution, official Chinese New Year celebrations were banned in China. The State Council of the People’s Republic of China announced that the public should change customs, have a revolutionized and fighting Spring Festival, and since people needed to work on Chinese New Year Eve, they did not have holidays during Spring Festival day. The public celebrations were reinstated by the time of the Chinese economic reform.

The festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely, and the evening preceding Chinese New Year’s Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck.

CHINESE NEW YEAR TIMELINE
1766 - 1122 BCE
The Shang Dynasty

Though it's not completely clear when exactly Chinese New Year celebrations began, it is said to have originated from the year end religious ceremony observed during the Shang Dynasty.

1928
The Kuomintang Party

Wanting China to celebrate New Year the same day as other cultures, the Kuomintang Party attempted to move Chinese New Year to January 1.

1967
Cultural Revolution

Chinese New Year celebrations were banned in an attempt to westernize Chinese culture.

2021
Year of the Ox

This Chinese New Year will welcome the Year of the Ox.

CHINESE NEW YEARS AROUND THE WORLD
Most of us follow the Gregorian Calendar, but there are New Year Days still celebrated around the world due to tradition or religious purposes.

CHINESE NEW YEAR STATISTICS
20% of the global population celebrates

The world’s population by the 2020 Chinese New Year will be around 7.7 billion people. Of those people, 2 billion will be celebrating Chinese New Year. In mainland China alone, there are about 1.41 billion people and in Hong Kong there are 7 million people. And if you add up the rest of the Chinese population living in other parts of Asia, America, and Europe, it’s easy to see how that 2 billion number will be fulfilled.

8 billion red envelopes
It wouldn’t be Chinese New Year without a red envelope to pass out to children and single young relatives. Every year, about 8 billion red envelopes make their rounds throughout Chinese families world wide. Each envelope contains either an even number of cash or chocolate coins, which both symbolize good fortune and wealth for the new year.

40 Days of celebration
Technically, the Spring Festival is 15 days, but celebrations start on New Year’s eve making it 16. However, you can also say that the holiday season starts in lunar December with the Laba Festival, making it 40 days of celebration. Traditionally, you have to spend time with your family and can only go out after the fifth day. It’s a national holiday meaning the large majority of stores are all closed, so the month before, people will buy nian huo, or New Year’s products. The Chinese stock up on cooking supplies, snacks, gifts, new clothes, and whatever else they might need to bring in the new year.

CHINESE NEW YEAR FAQS
How is Chinese New Year celebrated?

The Spring Festival, Chinese New Year, is celebrated with lots of food, the color red, and honoring ancestors.

Why is the Chinese New Year different?
Chinese New Year is a lunar holiday, meaning it’s celebrated at the start of a new moon rather than the beginning of the Gregorian calendar.

What was the animal for Chinese New Year 2019?
The 2019 Chinese New Year welcomed the Year of the Earth Pig on February 5.

CHINESE NEW YEAR ACTIVITIES
Remember your ancestors

Amid all the celebrations, it's easy to forget that Chinese New Year is really a holiday for the whole family — children and elders alike. Take a moment to appreciate those you love most.

Eat and be merry
First, consider all the dim sum delights that await for Chinese New Year. Then, remember to enjoy the fireworks, parades, and general merriment. Chinese New Year focuses on creating good luck for the year to come. Take time to enjoy yourself and others around you.

Share the traditional red envelopes
The red symbolizes good luck. The monetary gifts are meant to bring the recipient good fortune. Just make sure to gift cash in even numbers and do not have the number four in the amount.

5 FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT CHINESE NEW YEAR
1/4 of the world's population celebrates it.

More than 2 billion people celebrate or acknowledge the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year Festival lasts till the Lantern Festival
Typically lasting 16 days, each day of the Chinese New Year has a special activity that is celebrated.

Appeasing the Harvest Gods
In earlier times, the Chinese New Year was a time for praying to the harvest gods for a fruitful year ahead.

Lucky red envelopes
Red envelopes are given as a way for wishing good luck.

The largest annual migration happens during this festival.
The reunion dinner with the family is the most important aspect of the Chinese Spring Festival and people travel long distances to be home for the occasion.

WHY WE LOVE CHINESE NEW YEAR
It's red for a reason

Red is an auspicious color for the Chinese New Year, denoting prosperity and energy — which ward off evil spirits and negativity. Red lanterns, envelopes, and firecrackers make everything festive during the winter months.

New Year's (Eve) feasting
What is a celebration without feasting with friends and family? Chinese New Year's Eve dinner is one of the most important occasions of the year — celebrated with long noodles, trays of food (naturally), and sweet, plump oranges to spread the wealth.

No chores
Good luck is at its peak in the New Year. You don't want to sweep it away, do you? Take a breather from vacuuming and mopping, and go get your dumpling on! (If you must clean, make sure it's taken care of beforehand.)

National Freedom to Marry Day

The liberty to marry someone of the same sex is celebrated on National Freedom to Marry Day on February 12. Since 1999, this unofficial holiday has been fighting for love and promoting equal rights to marriage for the LGBTQ community. The cause has come a long way, but the issue of normalizing same-sex marriage is still not over. Even though more and more countries are now allowing a modified form of marriage between couples of the same sex, an absolute marital union between all LGBTQ couples should be completely acceptable.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL FREEDOM TO MARRY DAY
Since 1999, National Freedom to Marry Day is celebrated annually on February 12 to promote marriage between people of the same sex. The initiative for this holiday was taken by a Washington, D.C.-based gay rights advocacy law firm, Lambda Legal.

But the fight for allowing marriage between two people of the same sex has continued for decades before this holiday’s inception. Evan Wolfson, the founder of a group named Freedom to Marry, has been advocating the legal case for same-sex marriage for over 20 years now. During his years as a student at Harvard Law School, he wrote a paper in 1983 that is now considered to be the blueprint for the Freedom to Marry movement.

The most successful National Freedom to Marry Day was in 2004 when marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples by the City and County of San Francisco on the orders of the mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom. On February 10, a directive to the clerk’s office started to make the necessary changes on the “forms and documents used to apply for and issue marriage licenses […] in order to provide [them] on a nondiscriminatory basis.”

The holiday also falls two days before Valentine’s Day, so many LGBTQ people get married on National Freedom to Marry Day to celebrate their love. Knots are tied around trees, signs, or just about anywhere else, to signify ‘tying the knot.’

NATIONAL FREEDOM TO MARRY DAY TIMELINE
1983
The Touchstone of the Same-Sex Marriage Movement

During his third year at Harvard Law School, Evan Wolfson writes a thesis arguing for the freedom to marry for same-sex couples, which becomes the springboard for the Freedom to Marry movement.

A Day to Remember

On one of the most notable National Freedom to Marry Days since its establishment, the City and County of California issues marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

June 26, 2015
A Watershed Moment

Same-sex marriage is declared a constitutional right by the United States Supreme Court.

NATIONAL FREEDOM TO MARRY DAY FAQS
What are the 10 basic human rights?
According to the International Bill of Rights, they are:

The right to equality and freedom from discrimination.
The right to life, liberty, and personal security.
Freedom from torture and degrading treatment.
The right to equality before the law.
The right to a fair trial.
The right to privacy.
Freedom of belief and religion.
Freedom of opinion.

What is DOMA?
DOMA (The Defense of Marriage Act) defines marriage for federal purposes as the union of one man and one woman, and allows states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages granted under the laws of other states. It began to be challenged in the early 2010s.

What caused Obergefell v. Hodges?
In 2015, some parts of DOMA were still intact, including Section 2, which declared that states and territories could refuse to recognize the marriages of same-sex couples from other states. The case involved several groups of same-sex couples who sued their respective states for the states’ bans on same-sex marriage and refusal to recognize such marriages performed elsewhere.

HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL FREEDOM TO MARRY DAY
Get married!

Why not? Many couples take advantage of this holiday as an opportunity to ‘tie the knot.’ Not only will you be legally united with your loved one, but your marriage will also be an example for others. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Talk about it
Discussion and spreading awareness of the Freedom to Marry movement is needed more than ever. We are this close to breaking down the walls that hold back love so, in the name of love, let’s do this!

Celebrate with your friends and family
Express your support and celebrate with your LGBTQ friends. The holiday is a celebration of love so the more, the merrier!

5 FACTS ABOUT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
The Netherlands took the first step

In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country ever to legalize same-sex marriage.

The first to take a step backward
Alaska and Hawaii were the first states to ban same-sex marriage.

The punishment is severe in some countries
In some countries, particularly in the Middle-East, the punishment for being gay is the death penalty.

Some TV shows were progressive for their time
Even though same-sex marriage was still illegal, TV shows like “Friends” and “Roseanne” featured same-sex marriages in the mid-1990s.

The public view hasn’t drastically changed
Views on favoring same-sex marriage by the general public have remained lukewarm and, for the most part, unchanged over the last few years.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL FREEDOM TO MARRY DAY
Eliminating a primitive mindset

Like heterosexuals, the LGBTQ community desires to create long-lasting, stable relationships, too. It is cruel to not allow the matrimony of two people who are in love. National Freedom to Marry Day challenges this primitive mindset, and we love it!

It’s the month of love!
The month of February is all about lovey-dovey holidays, National Freedom to Marry Day included.

We love love!
We at National Today are all for any holiday that celebrates love! This world can never have enough of it, and with such great causes that promote it, we have even more reason to celebrate.

World Radio Day

World Radio Day was first proposed by Spain in September 2010. With backing from broadcasting associations around the world, it was unanimously accepted by UNESCO Member States in November 2011. The cool thing about radio is it’s still relevant and important in our daily lives. During those long drives for vacation or maybe to work, radio is still with us, keeping us singing and keeping us informed. It’s like a great friend and neighbor, one who’s always there and never lets you down—except radio will never borrow your weed whacker and forget to return it. Join in the worldwide events for World Radio Day on February 13 and find out how radio is still changing lives across the globe.

WORLD RADIO DAY ACTIVITIES
Tune in to a World Radio Event directly

There's events going on all over the world. This year the theme is Sports and Radio. In the USA, KOOP in Austin is celebrating. Their guests will share how they built communities through sporting events. Other topics include diversity in sports and peace and development through sports coverage.

Hold a Radio Only party
Yes! You can be the most imaginative person on the block by holding a Radio Only party. Invite your friends over and turn off the TV. Confiscate everyone's cell phone (that should be entertaining). Then spend the afternoon listening only to radio. Hey, at one time everybody did that. They loved it. You will be amazed at the variety of entertainment, news, and information available on radio alone.

Listen to the original War Of The Worlds broadcast
At one time radio was the only broadcast means for news and entertainment. Fictional dramas even played out on the radio. On October 30, 1938 CBS broadcast the drama "War of the Worlds." They intended it only slightly as a Halloween prank. Unfortunately, not everyone caught the part introducing the "fictional" drama. Many people believed Earth truly was being invaded by Martians. Chaos erupted in the streets of many cities. This was the power of radio. Celebrate by experiencing what was radio was like at the peak of its influence.

WHY WE LOVE WORLD RADIO DAY
Radio reaches everyone

Radio has been with us longer than any other kind of broadcast media. That means more people have access to radio than anything else. Each year on World Radio Day, experts in the field join together to work out how to reach isolated communities. World Radio Day makes sure everybody, no matter how wealthy or remote, has access to information.

Radio is free
There's lots of ways to get news, information, and entertainment. If you're getting it from cable television or internet you had to pay for that. Not so with radio. You get radio free in your car, in a cafe, and even in elevators. World Radio Day ensures this coverage will continue with the best quality programming possible.

World Radio Day is socially conscious
Every year hundreds of events are held across the world. There's different themes every year but they always relate to something socially conscious. In 2015 the theme was, "Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster." In 2014 the theme was "Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Radio." We aren't forgotten, folks. Radio still thinks we're important.

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, and we are ready to shower our significant others with love and tokens of our affection. This day of love is celebrated in so many ways, it is always exciting to see what new traditions are included or created year after year. Whether it is elaborate engagements, intimate dinners for two, spending time with family, or the most recent variation ‘Galentine’s Day’. It is a holiday we all can enjoy!

WHEN IS VALENTINE'S DAY 2021?
Love is in the air on Valentine’s Day on February 14. Even though we believe that love should be spread and celebrated every day, we don’t always remember to do that. So on this dedicated day, go above and beyond in expressing your love for family, friends, and of course, your significant other.

HISTORY OF VALENTINE'S DAY
The believed origins is that it came from the feast for the patron saints named Valentine, by the Catholic Church during the in 496 AD. This was a way to over shadow and later replace the deemed brutal Pagan festival of Lupercalia. This festival was celebrated at the beginning of spring and paid homage to the Roman God of Agriculture, Faunus, on February 15. A goat and dog would be sacrificed symbolizing fertility and purity, respectively. This would then involve the hide of the goat being torn into strips, dipped in the sacrificial blood, and painted across the women and crops.

Despite there being many Valentines associated with the patron saints day, historians believe that the romanticized element of how Valentine’s Day is celebrated today came from a priest who was martyred by emperor Claudis II Gothicus in around 270 CE. Varying stories talk about different St Valentines with some saying one was marrying couples in secret to prevent men going off to war, another healed the blind, and the next wrote a message to his daughter signed ‘your Valentine’. There is also a possibility that they could be the same person!

It was during the 1400s that the day was associated with romance. Messages, or ‘Valentines’ as they were called, began to appear. Hand written letters and poems declaring affections of love became more and more popular. In the mid-1800s, Valentine’s cards began to be commercially produced and traditional gifts were candy and flowers, especially red roses symbolizing love and beauty.

Today, Valentine’s Day has become inclusive of friends and family to show how much you care and love them. Companies have seized the opportunity to fit their products and services into the Valentine’s Day period to benefit from the sales boost, as it continues to grow each year.

National Donor Day

Valentine’s Day has a new meaning when you need an organ transplant to survive. 120,000 Americans currently waiting for precious organ transplants depend on the public to sign up with their state’s organ donor registries on National Donor Day every February 14. It’s a more concrete way to show love than giving heart-shaped candy, roses and red velvet teddy bears. By donating organs such as corneas, tissue, marrow, platelets and blood; you create a living legacy of your generosity with the ultimate gift of love.

NATIONAL DONOR DAY TIMELINE
1999
Paid Leave for Organ Donors.

Congress passed the Organ Donor Leave Act, allowing federal employees who serve as living organ or marrow donors to receive paid leave.

2001
Transplant Milestone

For the first time in the United States, the number of living donors exceeded the number of deceased donors.

2003
Increased Organ Donations

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiated the Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative to expand organ donor best practices in the nation’s largest hospitals.

2009
New Campaigns

The National Kidney Foundation kicked off its dramatically-named END THE WAIT! campaign with a goal of increasing organ donations.

2010
Success!

The first successful full face transplant made medical history at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Spain.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL DONOR DAY
Register as an organ donor

It's easy to register as an organ donor by either signing up online or in-person at your local state Department of Motor Vehicles office and there's no charge either to you or your family. When you register, show your driver's license or other authorized picture identification. Note that you don't have to carry or show your donor card as long as you're registered as a donor with your state and you always have the right to change your mind. Should you die in a hospital or after being on life support, the hospital then arranges for your donation.

Join a Donor Dash
All around the country on National Donor Day, Donor Dash fundraising events will be in full swing. The Donor Dash is a fun-filled 5K run/walk event that honors the lives of organ and tissue donors and recognizes those who continue to wait for transplants. Participants not only run and walk together but they share their stories and resources to keep hope alive.

Sew a quilt square
In some communities throughout the country, National Donor Day is a time to gather a group of donors to sew quilts honoring organ donors and recipients. For example, the Rocky Mountain Threads of Life are a group of quilters in Wyoming and Colorado who make beautiful quilts as a tribute to the people involved in this exchange of life. Later, the quilts are displayed at special community events.

WE'RE CORRECTING 5 REASONS WHY PEOPLE SAY "NO" TO ORGAN DONATION
I just haven’t given it any thought

If you consider the thousands of people waiting for transplants; your organ donation can keep one person from dying of organ failure every day.

I'm not supporting the consequences of someone's negative lifestyle
The truth is that only about 5 percent of those waiting for an organ transplant are drug abusers or alcoholics.

I have diabetes so I don't think I can be an organ donor
Here's the real deal — you can donate organs even if you have diabetes, and some donor recipients have even become donors themselves.

I don't have time to sign up
It's easy to register online, and consider this — if your organs were failing, wouldn't you want someone to make time for you?

I think I'm too old to donate
You're never too old to save someone's life with an organ donation.

WHY NATIONAL DONOR DAY IS IMPORTANT
It promotes a different outpouring of love

National Donor Day was chosen as the perfect day for Americans to show their love for people waiting for organ transplants. On this day, the public is encouraged to help the many thousands of organ transplant patients by joining an organ donation registry. Did you know that as an organ donor you can save up to 8 people or heal more than 75 lives with your eye and tissue donation after you die? That's an amazing way to express your love for humanity.

It gives you control over your final wish
By joining a donor registry, you declare your intention to donate your organs, eyes or tissue right after you die. Sometimes families don't always understand why donating organs is important, so once you decide to join a donor registry, discuss the decision with your family to ensure your last wish is honored. It's also wise to put your wish in writing, instructing your family to provide information and documentation on your medical and social history. Being proactive today wisely prepares your family to follow through on your commitment without undue stress.

It replaces myths with accurate information
There are currently more people awaiting transplants than in years past. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about becoming a donor or joining a donor registry so it's important to get the facts. For example, some people believe that certain illnesses or physical defects will keep you from being a donor which, with minor exceptions, is false. Other people think that physicians won't try hard to save your life if they know you're a donor, which discounts the number one priority for doctors — saving lives.
