I imagine even in the worst case scenario, you could spend some time as a piler while your workload is heavy, and then return to updating when you can make updates again.

I get super busy with IRL stuff as well. It comes and goes. I try to attend every raid still and be a presence on Disc. But as for maintaining NS nations? nah. Don't bother. if they CTE oh well.

Let it be known that if going to "school" conflicts with a scheduled raid, you are not permitted to go to school. Your loyalty to raiders is non-negotiable. There is no need for school where you are already in a NationStates military.
Most raider regions don't only have updaters who raid at updates, but also pilers, who move to the raided region when they see the order and endorse the raider delegate. You don't need to be online at update to be a raider.

I'll just be waiting for the next big thing to come now that Magna Aurea has been terminated. Until then, I shall retreat to the Pyrenees and wait for the next contract...

PD: If you ask, I don't raid for any raider region, I go independently.

How exactly does one choose a region to raid? I know it should be founderless, but are there any other criterion?

Whichever one you hate most.

Really? That's it? And is there a general preference for Frontiers, or was Magna Aurea a one-off case?

Magna Aurea's WA Delegate had few endorsements, so I guess raiders took the chance.

Generally, there are three ways to ward off raiders.
Raider Unity, Maintain a Governor, Sign a Treaty
Raider Unity means that raiders won't interfere with other raiders. This isn't super applicable to most, but if your region ever goes raider, and isn't like, fascist or something, you'll generally not see any other raiders picking fights.
Maintain a Governor means to, well, maintain a Governor - or at least, remove executive authority from your delegate. If you have a governor, nothing raiders can do can permanently wrest control of the region away from you.
Sign a Treaty is obvious - sign a treaty (namely a nonaggression pact) with a raider org, and that raider org will leave you alone. (Though no promises about other orgs)

The problem with a frontier is that middle one is impossible - a frontier, in exchange for spawns, sacrifices the position of Governor and the option of a non-executive delegacy - meaning it's the delegate who gets total power, not the founder or someone the founder chooses.
Anything that doesn't fit within the criteria is a valid target for a raider - so, since a frontier is inherently more vulnerable, they're inherently more likely to attract raider attention.
Some raids or orgs will have other specific criteria before they choose to engage a target, but for many, not being specifically exempted or impossible to hit is causus belli a-plenty.
