Ventus Prime wrote:“Hmm...perhaps the Elder may have people who can do that? I mean, I can help be part of your security but I am supposed to merely be an ambassador....which means I need security too.”

She thought for a moment before an idea came to her. “And I think I know who to ask...”

Two days later...

Shion couldn’t believe her luck. Just days ago she was about to be deployed onto the frontlines against a combined force of Imperials and Sistonians, only to be notified that the former retreated and the latter called out for a ceasefire. And then, right after that, she’s told that she’ll be working as security for the Ambassador for Bucksden...which wouldn’t be bad except the current ambassador is quite capable of protecting herself.

Well, this is what getting back into the military does for you, and apparently she wouldn’t be alone. There was another girl with her on the shuttle they were currently on. She seemed to keep mostly to herself, which was fine. Shion wasn’t necessarily a casual speaker either.

Still, if they were gonna work together they might as well get to know each other. “I see you carry a sword,” Shion said. “Army, I presume?”

The girl, who had long, strawberry blonde hair tied back, looked back to her. “Former member of Twilight Company. Now I serve under Chief of State Schnee as a potential Ace Ops member. You’re Sinon Asada, right? Of the Nightwalkers?”

Sinon smiled. “Guess I have a bigger reputation than I thought.”

“Are you kidding? You’re practically a legend, going all the way back to the Kapteynian War. And then of course there was that time you took on that Kunkengan android-” She then stopped and blushed. “Sorry...I didn’t even introduce myself. I’m Asuna Yuuki.”

The name caught Sinon by surprise. “Your family originate from Japan?”

“Yeah...I don’t like to mention it but the Yuuki family, even now, has been a rather wealthy family...though I’m not one to sit around in mansions and have servants.”

“I respect that...I’m from Japan as well, my family that is. Least we have one thing in common. And considering we’re returning to Earth.”

“Yeah, the thought has crossed my mind...but we have our orders.”

“Yeah, yeah...hopefully things won’t be too boring in Bucksden...”

Bucksden wrote:"Well, me and the Elders do have various proposals for new security measures, which could come in handy..."

Heidrun put this aside, however, once Penny mentioned that she seemingly had an idea of her own.

"Hey, it's worth a shot. Things are only gonna get tougher from here on out."

Two days have passed since Penny and Heidi returned to Bucksden. Everything has for the most part returned to normal. As it was approaching noon, there was then a knock at the door.

Heidrun was reading a book when she heard the knock. She'd been curious about when these folks Penny had asked would show up, although she hadn't thought about it much after that initial shuttle trip, but that interest resurfaced now that there were visitors at the door. She was the closest person, anyway, so she wouldn't have to wait to find out.

Putting down her book, she walked up and opened the door, ideally revealing whoever knocked. Still had to watch out for the possibility of pranksters, though.

There were two women standing there, both looked to be in their late twenties or early thirties. “Are you Heidi?” the woman with short hair asked. “I’m Sergeant Sinon Asada and this is Specialist Asuna Yuuki. We’ve been assigned as your security-”

“Salutations!” Penny suddenly showed up with a plateful of cookies. “You made it! Heidi, we can finally do more than bake cookies! Please, take one!”

The two women looked at one another before taking one and eating them. The sudden surprise on their face told the two robotic girls just how far Penny came in her baking.

She opened the door further, beckoning the two inside.

"Come on in, you might want some more of those cookies."

Sinon was a bit taken aback by the girl’s appearance, or more specifically, her age. She looked to be in her late teens, though the information given to her told her otherwise, also that she technically wasn’t human to begin with. Her grandparents in Japan would’ve been astonished if they saw her right now.

“I apologize if it seems if we’re imposing,” Sinon said as she decided to take another cookie. “We were appointed here by the Chief of State herself, saying that our protection was paramount to Bucksden-Ventuan relations and I can see why.”

“If I may ask...” Asuna began. “I’m aware of who Penny is but you...you’re an actual AI?”

Internally, Heidrun wasn't entirely pleased with the implications of their protection being "paramount to Bucksden-Ventuan relations", but she'd have to think more about that later. Right now it was more important to break the ice.

New united carolinas

It's official. McCarthy has one the presidency.

Ariana and her family watched the news in the Palmetto Mansion family room. It had been counted and recounted again. Zara McCarthy of the Cooperative Democrats has one the Presidency. Ariana was actually quite relieved at the results. Despite never voicing her explicit support for any candidate, Zara's similarities to her seemed to have really worked in Zara's favor.

Serenity, lying on a couch adjacent to Ariana, was fixated on the television with a small grin on her face. Although Serenity wasn't completely aware of everything that went into politics, she had a far better understanding of the system than most kids her age. Serenity looked up to her mother, and it was relieving to Ariana that Serenity would have another role model as President during her most crucial development into adulthood.

Now that McCarthy had won the vote, this new process would take place. The McCarthy administration would have to construct a new cabinet by December 23rd. This is so there would be enough time to transfer the current circumstantial information to the new administration. McCarthy would spend most of her time being trained and mentored by the old President about how the job works until around January 10th. January 10th was Marcus Sterret's birthday, so it's been a tradition to hold inauguration dates on that day instead of the 20th.

Reactions to the election results were, like always, mixed. The left viewed Zara as a young bastion of left-wing ideology, ready to carry on the torch of Ariana Thompson. At the same time, the right viewed her as too blunt and could potentially disrupt a 'political balance' established under the last two administrations. However, the most visceral reaction did not come from a particular party. But from a nation. Specifically, the Gulf Confederacy was often called Greater Florida. Even though most view the relationship between the two countries as "unsympathetic" and "cold," the reality is actually more complicated.

The people of both nations seem to get along pretty well, as both have a common identity of being what was once part of the Southern U.S. The problem is mostly the loose federal government of the nation. Currently, the President of the Gulf Confederacy is Samuel White, a very openly conservative, openly anti-Carolinian President. Ironically, the country's very way is set up both worked in his favor and at his disadvantage. Being a confederacy, each state is generally free to do as they wish, with little federal intervention. However, this meant that the country inadvertently became less united. Someone from Alabama would not feel anything like someone from South Florida. It's fine if internal administrative divisions have differences within a country, but in Greater Florida, the states had so much autonomy that it'd made actually uniting generally a lost cause. What didn't help was the over-representation of North and South Florida in their federal congress. Those two particular states are so disproportionately populated and disproportionately wealthy than Mississippi and Alabama that they ultimately had little say in the government. Not to mention the awkward geography between the Floridian Peninsula and the other two states made internal unity incredibly difficult.

This would lead to a lot of voter apathy in virtually all states, particularly because many people in each state do not feel their voice is being represented. To make things worse, there are no Presidential term limits, which is important in a democracy. Samuel White is actually on his fourth 4-year term. The man is 62 now and has grown a lot of anti-Carolinian rhetoric over the years. At first, he wasn't so against the Carolinas. But unfortunately for his country, he'd become more reactionary as time went on. But because less and less people voted each year, he continued to win support from the elderly and the other Floridian conservatives. Greater Floridians were leaving the country thanks to all the internal division, but perhaps the greatest reason was the economic differences. Foreign investors and traders often prefer the New United Carolinas over Greater Florida because of its stability and cohesion. Not to mention the competition between Jacksonville in North Florida, and Aerbourne in South Georgia, in the NUC. Aerbourne, more often than not, stole more imports and exports from the Jacksonville area.

People from Mississippi and Alabama left in droves, particularly the black population, searching for better job opportunities and a higher quality of life. The Georgias, Piedmont Province, Tennessee Province, and Cumberland province were the biggest recipients of these immigrants. All of these factors made President White extremely frustrated with the N.U.C, and the fact that Zara McCarthy had become president only enraged him more.

Zara, unlike most of her competitors, was not super against Greater Florida. She sympathized with the people, as she often went back and forth from Charlotte to Birmingham for family reasons. In reality, all parties were against the Government of Greater Florida, with the exception of the Modern Dixiecrats, solely because they hoped to reunify the U.S. in general. The National Party even went on to call GF the biggest threat to the Carolinas ever since Dunharrow. Despite that, Zara never took an aggressive stance towards Greater Florida's government in her proposed policies, for better or for worse depending on who you ask. Unfortunately, the feelings aren't reciprocated.

Since Zara won the election, Tallahassee released a statement calling it a fraudulent election. It was an unfounded claim for sure, there haven't been any major cases of voter fraud in the NUC presidential election for decades. However, Greater Florida went as far as to say that the election was "high jacked by socialists," and that "Carolinians have grown complacent with the alarming amounts of communists entering the government." Basically standard Greater Florida rhetoric. But it was still something to be aware of.

Regardless, Zara was now the new President of the N.U.C. Ariana couldn't wait to see what awaited them in the future. With that, Ariana opened up her laptop, conveniently located on the coffee table. On her screen were housing prices in Wilmington. Even though as a former President, she basically got lifetime compensation and protection, she still felt like she had to fulfill a new purpose. Even if Senator wasn't the same as President, just being to help her own province would be rewarding enough. Hopefully, anyways.

Was she crying? It felt like she was, but she couldn't tell. She wasn't always an emotional person but something about this moment made her feel sad.

"Mom?" Righteous said, getting up from his seat and rushing over to console is crying mother. Without any thoughts, her entire family was holding her on the couch. No real words had to be said. A new change in the direction of life is hard. But deep down she knew she wasn't really losing anything. She still had all she needed. Her family, her legacy, and her homeland.

"Hmm."
That's what Markos was thinking as he lounged in his medium-sized apartment in the Constantinople City Center.
He had done nothing for the last few days but watch TV, play videogames, and do the bare minimum for survival, but at that point, even that was getting boring.
He only had 2 weeks of vacation, and he figured he should probably do something with them rather than just rest in his room.

So he decided to do something.
And that something was a pretty wide trip across Europe.
Over the next day, he organized the trip, getting notes on every nation he planned to travel to. It was quite varied, with a decent amount of trips, some day trips, some a few days long.
He decides to use the extra weeks of leave he has, which extended the time he had to do this stuff.
When it's all said and done, he smiles. Maybe things were working out for him now after all.

So that's more well-known now, huh, Heidrun thought as Asuna corrected herself. That was admittedly a detail she'd hoped would've stayed obscure, but maybe telling someone who works within the government (technically two, counting Penny's ambassadorial position) wasn't the brightest idea. Ah well, too late to fix that now.

...a sharpshooter and a sword user, huh? An interesting team. If they were one, that is, which they would be by the end of this, Heidrun bet.

"Suppose I'll go next then. I'd tell you where I was born, but I doubt you'd know where it is, unfortunately. Again, long story. Former diplomat, current leader and head of governmental IT of Bucksden. Not particularly good at anything beyond the skills required for those jobs, of which defending myself hasn't been one for a while. I'd still say I'm alright, though."

That's... a total lie, of course, even if she had been getting better. Not that they needed to know that, though. Besides, if there was going to be any fighting, there were three capable combatants here.

Welcome to the New West Indies!

What is this place?

Our community is a dedicated group of roleplayers, government workers, lawmakers, comedy junkies, flag-makers, designers, and many more!

Founded on March 7th, 2018 by Achipel, the New West Indies (NWI) initially created a modern roleplay canon that has continued ever since. Nations began solely in the Caribbean area of the map, but as the community grew (and grow quickly it did), the roleplay became more complex with it, becoming more Post-Modern and spawning a variety of new adventures.

Vexillology (flag-making) is at the heart of the region. Experienced creators like Cymiopolis, New united carolinas, and Portinabia (among others) frequently show off their skills.

Government and lawmaking have recently begun to take hold, as many experienced members debate potential reforms and changes to regional institutions and affairs.

Members often discuss politics, memes, games, and other topics on our Regional Message Board (RMB) and especially Discord. Anyone who follows the rules and wants to have a good time in their area of interest is welcome here!

What should I do first?

Apply for Citizenship!

You should start your New West Indies experience by completing the Citizenship Application, which will allow you to experience roleplay, lawmaking, and other engaging activities! Once you fill it out completely, relevant authorities will inform you if it is approved.

Make sure to answer every question! To decide what RP claim you want (if desired), go to the Regional Map – make certain that what you want isn't already taken (is any color besides grey). If you are having trouble with the app, contact a regional officer.

Explore our Community!

Our Linkdiscord server is the best place to start – you can begin mingling with the citizenry and ask questions if you're confused. You can also introduce yourself on the RMB as well.

Our Constitution outlines our laws and values – every citizen should read it and be familiar with the rules of the Indies road.

Speaking of the RMB, getting your feet wet in roleplay is quite important if you want to participate. Whether you're a newer player or experienced roleplayer, it's beneficial to get your first post out there and introduce yourself in- and out-of-character.

Finally, you should consider accessing the following resources for knowledge and further assistance:

Regional Master Dispatch

| Where you can find links to every regional resource, including many described in this document

Glossary of Terms

| Are you confused by NationStates lingo or our region's terminology? This ought to help

How do I get involved?

Roleplay!

Roleplay (RP) is the main attraction for new and old members alike. Start by creating your nation's basic lore; where is it on the map? What are its socioeconomic challenges? What are its politics like? These questions and others will guide you through creating an overview dispatch (such as this one) if you are so inclined. Otherwise, begin diplomatically engaging and describing the issues your nation faces on the RMB, so everyone can start getting familiar.

Once you are settled into the canon, branch out! Create some personable characters, discuss IC legislation in the Union of Nations, make an alliance, or create your own business! If you are so inclined, and become familiar with our guidelines, you could even make your own roleplay for the region! The possibilities are truly at your leisure (barring something extraneous).

See below for further assistance.

Guide to NWI Roleplay

| To start getting acquainted with how RP functions in our region, see here

Participate in the General Assembly!

Once you become a citizen, you are automatically a member of the NWI General Assembly (GA), our regional lawmaking body. As such, you have the opportunity to not only vote on and discuss legislation, but you can also propose your own! We have many experienced members that can assist in the process, especially for newer members. The best way to begin learning about the GA and discuss law is to join our Linkdiscord and go to the GA channel.

Contribute to the Regional Government!

Our Executive Branch is made of the Secretary-General, the head of government, who every six months (once elected) appoints a cabinet of four Secretaries that make up the "Secretariat." These nations execute GA law, protect the region, and moderate certain regional affairs.

Once you become more familiar with our region, any citizen can run for office, whether that be the Secretary-General or General Assembly President! Additionally, you can be appointed to a Secretarial position or a lower role within one of the Executive departments.

Even if you do not want to work in government, it is your prerogative as a citizen to vote in elections, which increases representation and makes government work better for the people as a result.

Join the World Assembly!

Joining the world assembly not only provides many benefits to you, but also helps the region in numerous ways.

Once you've joined the world assembly, you should endorse the current delegate (Karteria), which allows the delegate to have more sway in World Assembly voting and further secures the region. You can also discuss current WA topics and legislation with other members of the NWI in our WA channel on Linkdiscord.

See "2.4 What is the World Assembly?" near the bottom of this document for instructions on how to attain WA membership.

What are issues?

Issues are the key to any initial NationStates experience. To access them, click the button in the top left corner of your page that says "issues." From there, you can answer the critical questions for your nation however you please.

Depending on how you answer issues, they will affect your nation's "stats" and potentially enact "policies." See the toolbar on your nation's page (underneath your motto) for more information about each effect.

Issues have no major bearing on regional roleplay, but they can give you ideas for how to formulate your nation in-character. Just answered an issue enacting euthanasia, or banning nuclear power? Why not do it in RP too!

If you don't want to answer issues, or you want to answer them more/less frequently, you can adjust the duration between each one in your nation's settings.

What is a dispatch?

Dispatches are canvases for nations to express anything they wish in a public setting. You can write, roleplay, campaign, design art, or anything in between – all through a simple dispatch.

The Chief of State apparently recommended the two of us instead of an entire security detail, not that I mind of course. Speaking of which...” She then got up. “I’m going to do a sweep of the surroundings.”

“Nah, it’s fine, though we should probably figure out where we’re going to be staying.”

“Hmm...Heidi, I don’t suppose there would be an issue if they stay in one of the adjacent apartments?” Penny asked.

Ventus Prime wrote:“Well...she didn’t word it exactly like that,” Sinon admitted. “Someone suggested that the ambassador to Bucksden would need security, mostly because it’s a requirement and probably because they want to keep the fact that Penny herself is a living weapon quiet. The Chief of State apparently recommended the two of us instead of an entire security detail, not that I mind of course. Speaking of which...” She then got up. “I’m going to do a sweep of the surroundings.”

“You need me to come along?” Asuna asked.

“Nah, it’s fine, though we should probably figure out where we’re going to be staying.”

“Hmm...Heidi, I don’t suppose there would be an issue if they stay in one of the adjacent apartments?” Penny asked.

"That shouldn't be a problem. If I remember correctly..."

She knew there hadn't been any people moving in since her and Penny, and having looked at what apartments were vacant back then, she realized they'd gotten quite the lucky break.

"...yeah, that should work! The adjacent apartments are all available. I should be able to get that arranged pretty quickly, so don't you two worry about where to stay."

“Sounds good,” Sinon said as she left the room. She went up to the room and surveyed the area. There were plenty buildings around, plenty of places where an assassin could be hiding. It seemed silly but Heidi was an important leader.

Personally, she had to get out of the room at the moment. What the hell was VSI thinking? Battle droids were bad enough, but ones with increased intelligence? She shouldn’t blame Penny for that, and she didn’t, but Sinon had seen first hand what a droid could do with a blaster in its possession.

She then noticed a building around the same and focused on it, her vision suddenly zooming in. That was another secret she kept to herself. During the Kapteynian War, Sinon had unfortunately taken shrapnel to her face and lost an eye in the process. She thought her career, and life as she knew it, was over, but a glimmer of hope shined her way. Augmentations were still a developing technology but she was able to replace her one eye and then decided to replace the other. It was ironic in a way, her feelings considering she was part machine now.

Even with the bustle of the city, things seemed calm out there. Despite the many places someone with ill intentions could hide, there did not appear to be any danger as of now.
But as she zoomed in on the building, she'd end up seeing something strange. There was some kind of shadowy figure, its true identity impossible to tell thanks to where it was and what it was wearing. Yet... it seemed to be staring at her intently, almost studying her. It then crossed its arms before disappearing into the building, leaving behind an empty balcony.
Whoever, or whatever that was, it was gone.

Meanwhile, Heidrun thought that something was troubling Sinon as she went outside. But bothering her while she was working, especially when it related to her own safety, wasn't something she wanted to do right now, so she instead put her hands behind her head, and began the process of properly assigning the housing for the detail of two, her eyes gaining a soft glow as she did so.
