The Rustling Leaves of New Kvenland

Terrabod wrote:Is there anywhere you'd want to visit during lockdown so you could just be there by yourself?

I'd love to go to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo. I've never been before but I think it'd be great to be able to take the time to look at everything and read everything without the crowds.

I'm really jealous of art museum security guards from last year. Imagine having the entirety of the Louvre, or the Met, or the Getty practically to yourself, no one around for miles. Must've been unreal

Nope, I have in fact moved to a new country with just a suitcase! You are correct however that 1 is true! I have been photographed by the street view car twice, about 6 months apart. Which means of course that Jutsa is correct:

Thanks Middle Barael! I got tired of the old one, I thought the red and black stripes were getting a bit garish. I have however maintained the Togolese influence with a golden ratio flag and 5 stripes as well as the Uruguayan influnce (now more explicit), and I have added the influence of the flag of the city of Eindhoven.

I dunno. The problem is that when something beautiful becomes familiar, it often ceases to be beautiful.

I suspect that for them, the exhibits are cognitively associated with the concept of work, and so are less appealing.

That sounds possible certainly, but I think, even with familiarity, some things are always beautiful or engaging to some extent. Maybe not the same as people seeing them for the first time, but absolutely better than some other jobs.

I won my school's GeoBee last year and made it to the State Finals (only 100 students get in), but it was then cancelled due to COVID, and this year they did not hold a State GeoBee (though we did hold an in-school tournament, which I also won)

But you must be really, really, really great at geography if you made it so close to winning the state!

And how did you move to a new country with only one suitcase? Please elaborate, it sounds really interesting.

Nice. I mainly do History Bee/Bowl / (Reach for the Top) as my trivial pursuit. My geo knowledge is quite general, but hopefully improving as I practise for next year.

It looks awesome. (As an aside, could you share how you made it? I'm getting tired of seeing the flag of the former kingdom of Aragon.)

I feel like this also applies to the dream of living in a skiing town. As someone on vacation, it seems amazing but the novelty of going once every two years goes away if it's the common weekend activity. I also agree that when you turn a game into a career it loses some of its fun as you feel required to play, rather than playing at your own time or savouring your chance to appreciate the art.

Ironically I think I know significantly more geography now, but for some reason they don't make geography bees for adults. Sad!

I moved to the UK to do my masters degree without having been there before, which in fairness is a fairly low-risk move coming from the USA. Once I finished my degree though I moved again with only a suitcase to a part of the USA I'd never lived in for a job!

Fun fact. I actually won my state bee a few years ago! (Back in like 2015.)

Consider this when it comes to music. Does the vast availability of music online make music less appealing? Does the beauty of Chopin lessen after the 50th listen?

I think familiarity changes the aspect of somethings beauty without necessarily reducing it. The first time you stand beneath the whale skeleton you experience the beauty associated with its size and the implications of the animal's living existence. After a while, the beauty of the creature may come from the more minute details. It may lose that smack-in-the-face "wow" factor, but beauty exists comfortably without sublimity.

Beauty is highly subjective though, so that's not really an argument in the absolute, intrinsic nature of familiarity.

I grew up (and still live) in a touristy wine region, and this sounds about right. I certainly don't get all the fuss over wine, but I can appreciate the scenery, even if it's nothing special to me (apart from nostalgic, I guess? I did grow up here...). I also still appreciate the events from time to time, even though I've been to many of them most years I've been here.

The Equatorial Forests of Uan aa Boa

The most serene republicans wrote:Ay Uan aa Boa, can you answer me something real quick for a lore thing?
When did the first humans arrive to Uan aa Boa?

Thematically, Uan aa Boa is in something like sub-Saharan Africa, so there would be no identifiable time at which humans arrived from another place. From the 17th to mid-20th century it was a colony of an unspecified white majority Catholic nation.

This might be one of those things we were talking about recently where individual lore conflicts with shared lore if other nations close to my current position on the map have different ideas about when humans arrived in Forest's New World.

I'm a little intrigued as to why you ask though...

Homo habilis existed around 2.8 million years ago. That's just before the quaternary/ice age. By about 1.5 million years ago erectus had already spread around the world

This is interesting...

So, I changed my mind on the placement of MSR on the map, it is now (going to be) between Uan aa Boa and Gorthias, slightly south of the equator. When I was trying to flesh out the pre-history of MSR, seeing how much MSR is inspired by Sri Lanka and Cuba, I thought it would be interesting to have different ethnic groups arrive in the islands at different times, like these places had.

And, if our timelines worked, I thought it would be a cool detail that the ancestors of the group inhabiting Gura and Matos came from Uan aa Boa some 20.000 years back. It makes even more sense because the islands of Gura and Matos would be the closest point to Uan aa Boa on the map in that new placement.

Basically, ancestors of the mountain people arrived on the island and formed a civilization way earlier than any other group, but eventually retreated only to the mountains for yet unknown reasons, leaving a series of ancient ruins throughout the main island. Then, ancestors of the Guranian people arrived (presumably from Uan aa Boa), but kept mostly to the northern parts of the archipelago. Later, ancestors of the modern Amasarian groups arrived (from... somewhere?), by then still culturally unified. Around 2.000 BCE The Amasarians became religiously (and culturally) divided, with the formation of two different "empires" following two different versions of Amasarianism.

And by the late 16th century an intentionally vague catholic european nation colonizes the island until the 1960's, when a communist-led revolution breaks out, creating MSR as we know it today.
