Yes, she was a great icon for justice and empowerment. And now that she’s gone, Mitch McConnell, a.k.a. the “we will wait for the election to nominate a Supreme Court justice” guy during Obama’s last term, has said that he will push forward to replace him with a conservative nominee, outrights breaking one of her final wishes, not to be replaced until there was a new president.

This is sad news, but the November surprise has me significantly more worried, tbh.

As evidence of her professional and personal character, I've found people are surprised to learn that RBG and Scalia were friends outside of the courtroom, often dining and attending the opera together. Even with their ideological differences, the two had been colleagues on the DC Circuit, and even Scalia expressed admiration for her as a jurist. Perhaps there is somewhere a Courtroom Unseen hosting a vigorous, skilled, and unyielding debate, followed by a dinner and a show.

edit - and I don't really mean to sing praises of Scalia too much here. But, FFS, after the last four years, if Morgan-Freeman-As-God-Almighty presented me with a Big Red Button which would make Trump disappear in exchange for bringing back Scalia, the force of my slap would make Tsar Bomba look like a firecracker. Besides, we might get lucky and Ruth will follow him back by sheer force of will too. Someone's got to keep that bastard honest.

Couple things to note here:

1. McConnell advocated for the idea that President should not be able to nominate a Supreme Court Justice during election years when the Senate and Presidency were not controlled by the same party, which was the case in 2016 but not 2020.

2. The seat is not owned by RGB, she had the tremendous privilege of being the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court and served on it dutifully for 27 years. The Constitutional process is not bound by anyone's wishes.

That all being said, it's incredibly sad and disheartening to hear of RBG's passing toward. Best wishes to her family through this difficult and tumultuous time. I also believe the President and Senate should work to get a new justice on the court by Election Day.

2. Apologies, I corrected the error in an edit to my earlier post. Secondly, the point I was making is that RBG did not own the seat, and does not get to dictate what happens to it.

3. Mitch McConnell made it very clear in 2013 when the Democrats, under Harry Reid, got rid of the filibuster for most judicial nominations (https://thehill.com/video/191064-mcconnell-dems-will-regret-this). Everyone reaps what they sow.

True, true. I'm fortunate to live in an area with lots of preserved "open space" which is actually not more than a mile or two from the nearest civilization. Which I guess might not count. But there's cliffs and rattlesnakes and cougars, so maybe it does.

I mean, I'm not the the only one who brings three liters of water, a first aid kit, a GPS, tools and patch kits, and a whistle to get quarters at the bank right? 0_o

I saw an interactive map somewhere once, and you could randomly redraw all 50 state boundaries along existing county lines with the push of a button. Doing that could give you whatever result you wanted in the 2016 election. I've often thought that they should at least break up large states and amalgamate small ones. There's no real reason that, say, the Dakotas shouldn't be a single state, or that California should be. Other things should merge, like Delaware with Maryland, and Rhode Island with Connecticut. Of course, not having the Electoral College would solve the issue of the popular and electoral votes being out of alignment.

Banks have quarters where you live? Wow. We had a shortage here months ago. Admittedly I have not tried recently, so I don't know if it's the same.

I love unplanned excursions into nature. Civilization is looking pretty bad. When it falls, it will be for the best, in the end.
