Grocery stores can be audibly identified by the giggling emerging from them, heavy industry must go to expensive lengths to dispose of waste, dubiously qualified Skandilundian barristers keep referring to laws as 'government guidelines', and moonshine has made a resurgence.

Rahul Raghuraman wrote:AN UNEXPECTED END

While Rebels were preparing to make their last stand and AM was sure of their victory, both sides met an unexpected end. Here is a similar to Tarius/Odil Spectre battle-style report from an unknown source:

[Set scene: grassy hills as far as the eye can see]
REBEL and AM soldiers in position, each army in formation with a few dozen soldiers per row with seemingly infinite rows on both sides.
Hykks Sary appears at the front of her army, on a horse, red lightsaber on and by her side, facing straight towards the enemy.
Both sides are waiting for their opponents to move.
AM soldiers whisper behind Hykks Sary.
"What are you whispering about?" Sary asks.
"Look in front of you!" one of them answers.
Rebel soldiers have moved a few steps back, and are all kneeling at a patch of dirt.
Suddenly, there is a blinding flash of light, and standing on the dirt is someone thought to be long gone in a place far, far away.
"No! It can't be! I killed you and found the location of Darth Maul's lightsaber with your information. Who are you?"
"You know very well who I am. I am much too hard to kill; that one blaster shot at me did nothing. Your hurrying led you to believe I was dead."
"No! Noooooooooo! You can't be here! You can't!"
All eyes are on Sary and her Star Wars galaxy-master as they argue.
"Everyone said 'old Havarlo Engarna is dead, Hykks Sary killed him'. You're FAKE!!!"
"We both know that I am real and that I am here."
"If you are not dead now, you will be soon! Troops, charge!"
[The following half an hour is bloody and all Rebel soldiers are dead or hiding, while only 4 AM soldiers remain]
"My soldiers, you must do what is right. Help me kill this old man and this power will rule forever!" Sary says, off her horse and lightsaber pointed at her old master.
Sary's 4 soldiers pull out electrostaffs and assume battle position. The horse gallops away in fear.
[Set scene: master and evil apprentice with bodyguards, facing off for the first and the last time]
Sary advances towards Engarna, who pulls out his orange lightsaber and prepares himself.
They try to make the other afraid, but they both know their opponent too well.
"I have come here to another galaxy, so the Force is useless. We must finish this without it."
Engarna runs as Sary.
[Cut to fierce battle]
Sary (S) jabs at Engarna (E), who steps back. E goes for S's head, but S parries just in time. They predict each other's moves perfectly, tiring both of them out. Sary is younger and more energetic, so she slowly advances. Eventually, the duel reaches its end. E desperately runs away, and when S catches up, he reveals a surprise. Out of his pocket comes another orange saber. Wait, the duel isn't done yet! E skillfully uses one saber to deflect and one to attack, leaving Sary on the defensive at all times. Now, the final moments come close. S ducks and tries to go for E's feet. Unfortunately, he sees the grab for power in time and pushes the red lightsaber away and far off to the side and onto the ground, while at the same time throttles his longer offensive saber at Sary's neck. Sary is on the ground, orange lightsabers surrounding her neck like scissors. Just then, the 4 soldiers advance towards E, who decapitates 3 of them in a split second. The 4th is out of sight, and takes his electrostaff on a journey to Engarna's back, who screams in pain. Sary uses the chance to escape and get her saber. In moments, though the last troop is dead, Sary has Engarna moments from doom. Engarna's sabers are on and in his hands, but his hands are behind his back. Sary does it and sticks her lightsaber through Engarna's heart. In his last moment of life, the fallen master throws his two orange lightsabers at Hykks Sary's body. One misses, and Sary taunts Engarna: "Really, you want to stop me? Hah!" He responds in his dying breath: "Yes. You cannot stop me. Not this time, not any time. Never." Sary is confused for a millisecond, then sees that the other saber is going for her head. "Noooooooooo!!!"
[Aftermath]
The Rebellion soon after that has won the war and all Unidalanians are back to normal. 3 months, 2 weeks, and 3 days after the start of the War for TLU, the Treaty of Alomphmerks is signed and ratified. The TLU is soon back to normal.
This is THE WAR FOR TLU.
Thank you for reading.

That's the war's end!

The Golden Haven of Liberlitatia

December 10, 2052

Odil sat down, turning the possibilities over in his head. Only the day before he’d bitten into his daily bread ration, only to have his teeth slam against a hard plastic object. Fighting back the urge to swear in pain, he looked closer and saw the unmistakable shape of a (relatively ancient) USB disk drive.

Confused, he picked it up; upon closer examination, there was a small piece of paper taped around the side of it.

‘Keep this—stand by.’

Given that he’d called for assistance, he had a pretty good idea of where this mysterious disk drive had come from (who else would go to such lengths to hide something so inconsequential?) —and yet how did they manage to sneak something into the very lair of the beast? Surely there had to be at least one person on the inside, if not for assistance, then at least for information. There was one encouraging piece of information that the flash drive had delivered to him, however. Without a device he couldn’t actually access the data there, but he could comfort himself with the knowledge that his allies had expanded their reach—they had friends in high places.

Three days later

“Oi, for god’s sake, can I use the toilet in peace? Give a man his dignity!” Shaking his head in pretend disgust, Odil shut the door to his bathroom and reached underneath the sink cabinet. Looking around in the darkness, his fingers brushed against something that definitely wasn’t metal. As he’d expected, it was a blue backpack. His brother, Tarius, while loyal to the Crimtonian Spectre government, hadn’t given up his value of hospitality. He was one of the few that knew of Odil’s imprisonment-or his being alive. He’d handed Odil this backpack earlier, telling him, “All this prison food isn’t going to keep you cheerful-perhaps you’d like some of these snacks.” Appreciative of the care, Odil reached for the strap through the metal detector—until the guard operating it waved his hand away and took it to another room—for inspection, he supposed.

Disappointed—but not surprised, Odil was escorted back to his cell, where a meal sat waiting. Careful this time to not break his teeth in half, he tore the loaf of bread in two, where this time a note fell out.

‘The backpack’s in the bathroom, under the sink.’

Puzzled, he tried to figure out what this note meant. Clearly, this had to be the work of one of his friends-and what was waiting for him there? Of course, it had to be the package Tarius had packed for him, and yet why did something so innocent necessitate this level of secrecy?

Pulling the bag free of its confines, he received an answer-the clank of metal on metal confirmed his suspicion that this bag was not packed full of sweets. He grinned as he peered in and saw the contents. There was another note, too.

‘Stand by.’

So excited you published this!! Yes, I read it already, but I’ll give the same feedback now that I gave then: this is great! A huge improvement on the original, both in terms of the quality of writing and the details you’ve added (and yes, I’m dissing myself here). Looking forward to the next chapters!

Also, Lib, have you quietly read all of the Endgame chapters I’ve published?

Rahul Raghuraman wrote:

Once Bersan wiped the blood dribbling out of his hand onto a patch of grass, he reached for his communicator, an effort hampered by his weakening strength and slowly-fading consciousness. He pushed the “X” button — an emergency hotline to PTJ headquarters — and was picked up almost instantly.

“This is Rufiag,” came the voice of the base’s supervisor. “Sieders, what do you need?”

Bersan cleared his throat, working hard to keep the action from turning into a raspy cough. “Medical attention,” he said, his voice strained. “And after that, I need to speak with Gierplun.”

Bersan awoke from his semi-conscious dream to the distinct electric whirring of a Unidalanian medical helicopter. Much smoother than the Harbinger’s vehicle had been, he contemplated as the sound grew closer. The Harbinger…

Moments before he fell back into a stupor, Bersan’s senses were stimulated by the ruffling of tall grass as two rapid-response workers hurried from the helicopter to the fallen agent. “Mr. Sieders,” a voice — the woman on the left? — said coolly, “you’re under our protection now.”

“Plan?” Bersan croaked, his throat feeling… well, at this point, he wasn’t sure what he was feeling.

“We’re taking you to the nearest Dauilandian hospital,” the woman said. “The Teranar City Hospital, in Crimtonia.”

When I meet with Director Gierplun, he’ll want to know what happened — not only with the search for Scinrea, but… everything after that, too.

I can give him a factual report, but that’s insufficient. Gierplun will know it; I will know it. He doesn’t need the report. He needs my report. My experiences.

But I wouldn’t be able to answer all his questions, not least the questions about the Harbinger. Possibly not even those about Scinrea — she answered nearly everything I asked, but by the end, I had as many questions as I began with.

I wouldn’t be able to answer all of Gierplun’s questions not only because so much is unknown, but because I can hardly answer my own questions about what’s happened.

But I’m Gierplun’s friend. More, I am a member of the PTJ. I have a duty to tell him the truth. The entire truth.

The even hum of the rotors slowed to silence as the helicopter’s landing skates touched concrete on the roof of Teranar Hospital. “We’ve arrived, Mr. Sieders,” the woman — Pellaton Russell of the Dauiland Alliance Domestic Safety Service, as Bersan had learned — told Bersan. “You need only cooperate with the hospital.”

Bersan affirmed with an “I will,” the temporary energy drug he’d been fed finally taking effect.

Three Crimtonians came out to carry Bersan’s cloth-matted gurney into the building. They wheeled him into an elevator that took the group to the third floor of the hospital, then, upon arriving at an enclosed section of the low-ceilinged area, gently and gracefully moved him from the stretcher to a proper bed. “Dr. Staph will be with you within the minute,” one of the Crimtonians said.

Would Scinrea have still died had I not been there to plan a counterattack with her against the Harbinger? Would she have still died had I not let down my guard at the building, and let us both get shot?

Why did I let myself relax there — not only there, but also at Trinity’s headquarters?

Trinity… all the agents died at Trinity. No, not the agents. My agents.

I knew them all personally. They were some of the best agents I knew. Some of the best people I knew. I, and their colleagues, and their friends, and their families.

Their lives were — are — as important, as invaluable, as… alive… as mine. And I ended everything for them. I let them die…

“Mr. Sieders,” Dr. Staph said sympathetically and with melancholy, “I must admit that I admire your continued determination in pressing yourself through all this.”

Staph paused; Bersan heard the sound of machinery buzzing. “Unfortunately,” the doctor continued, “you must permit your mind to relax and your body to rest.”

Bersan willed his eyes to open; his right eye refused. Staph was standing at the foot of the bed, operating equipment arranged on the table behind him, clipboard and scanner in hand. “For… what?” Bersan said, his words coming out as a soft gasp.

“I know the effects feel minimal right now,” Staph explained patiently. “However, I am about to have you sleep for several hours so I can perform the… brain operation, shall we call it. After the anesthesia wears off, it is crucial that you relax yourself.”

Staph turned to the equipment. “So as to… minimize the pain.”

I was too stubborn, too arrogant. I let my curiosity get in the way of my experience, and my arrogance in the way of my better judgement.

And now they’re all gone. My agents — my people — will never come back, will never be. Scinrea — I hardly knew her, but her tragedy was agonizing. At the absolute least, her desire not to be human has been fulfilled—

What am I thinking!? I let her die. I killed her. I. Killed. Her.

I will never repeat my fatal errors.

What will I do? What should I do?

What should I tell Gierplun? What should I ask him to do? Ask myself to do?

“Luck has favored you, Mr. Sieders,” Dr. Staph said. “You are healing well.”

“Longer?” Bersan asked, capable of the full question but unwilling to even approach his body’s rapidly-changing limits.

“The recovery period is nearly over,” Staph specified. “You only need to wait two to three days until you’re sufficiently healed.”

Seeing the tentative expression on the doctor’s face as an indication that he had more to say, Bersan stayed silent. “I would like you to stay four days before leaving,” Staph explained. “Sufficient healing is enough for you to return to a normal life, but your life is hardly normal.”

Bersan shook his head, a slow but functional motion from left to right. “Leave sooner,” he decided. “See… Gierplun.”

Staph consulted his clipboard. “Ah, yes… Gierplun,” he said. “The leader of Unidalania’s intelligence department. I have no doubt he’s willing to meet you later rather than sooner in order to ensure you recover more thoroughly.”

“No,” Bersan insisted. “Sooner.

I know what to tell Gierplun.

“The agents who died — I want to talk to their families,” Bersan told Kentar Gierplun. “They need to know that their parents, their children, their siblings — that they died courageously and honorably.”

“I can arrange that,” Gierplun said, continuing to be unusually quiet.

“One more thing before I leave,” Bersan said. He placed a one-page document in front of Gierplun. The director read the document, but said nothing.

“I’m retiring from the PTJ,” Bersan confirmed. Expecting Gierplun to put up at least a ceremonial fight, Bersan continued, “I refuse to inflict any more pain, to kill any more people. And I want to spend my last weeks of life with my family. I haven’t spent more than a few hours with them since Tessin’s hypnosis plot all that time ago.”

Gierplun nodded solemnly. “I understand completely,” he said quietly. “May you find happiness and comfort.”

“Thank you,” Bersan replied, standing up and turning to the door. “I will try… Kentar.”
