I was a seafarer, in Real Life. Many years ago. Not gonna bother you with old salt stories, but let me tell you...I been on the the far side of the world. Been to extremes. From the fjords of Norway to the stifling heat of New Caledonia. Saw things I can't explain. Witnessed both the glories and the failures of human nature. Including discrimination, and I was right there discriminating. You see, on a merchant vessel deck hands and engine room men have "true seafarer special status". Stewards and cabin boys didn't. They weren't real seafarers. They didn't get their hands dirty. But - between you and me - it's a good idea to be respectful to the ship's cook. Do it, if you ever think to go to sea. You can thank me later.
Seafaring isn't for the faint of heart. I saw people dying in the North Sea.
Children.
I still dream of it. But my word, it was the most extraordinary thing I've ever done, and I would do it all over again. The good and the bad.
