THE WHITEFORD EXAMINER

ELECTION 2020: Far-right and Greens make gains, Federalists remain largest party

WHITEFORD, F.D. — With almost all states and constituencies finished reporting, the Federalists have managed to win the most seats in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, the National Front won its largest share of votes in party history, and the Greens made substantial gains in the face of ongoing climate concerns in the country. In the 43 member Senate the Federalists kept their 12 seats, Republicans received 7 seats (-1), the Amrelian People’s Party 2 seats (-3), Liberals 7 seats (-1), National Front 8 seats (+3), Greens 5 seats (+2) and Social Democrats 2 seats.

The results looked a bit different in the lower house. The Federalists won 132 seats (a loss of 18), Republicans 42 seats (-18), the APP 18 seats (-13), Liberals 80 seats (+20), NF 39 seats (+19), Greens 20 seats (+10) and SDP 8 seats.

All eyes will now be on the United Federal Assembly which convenes on Monday to select the next four members of the Federal Directory. Traditionally the Directory's members have been chosen from the largest parties. The Federalists are likely to receive two seats on the Directory with the other two seats up for grabs between the Republicans, Liberals and National Front.

Federal elections were held in the Amrelian Federative Republic on December 18, 2020 to elect all members of the Federal Assembly. Both houses will convene as the United Federal Assembly on December 21 to elect the next Federal Directory.

The far-right National Front made substantial gains, winning the state of East Elizabeth and receiving the largest number of Deputies in the history of the party. The Liberals lost one seat in the Senate but gained 20 in the Chamber of Deputies. Edward Bennett and the Greens performed well, taking 5 seats in the Senate and 20 in the Chamber. Most notably, the Amrelian People’s Party continued to lose seats in both houses, as well as the Republicans and Federalists, though the Federalists remained the largest party.

In terms of the composition of the Federal Directory, the Federalists are likely to receive two seats with the other two seats up for grabs between the Republicans, Liberals and National Front.
