True, but we may have an Islamic Republic of Iran Navy situation here, where you have a small but decent navy, but you bolster it with armed civilian vessels. Given the budget though, I'd say that isn't what they're going for.

Mate,

Militaries can be hard, hell, I'm shi* at almost anything related to armies. But tossing a random number up and acting as it's fine isn't a great way to get an army up if you ask me.

As I already said, which I deeply recommend doing; try to actually calculate even basic budget and equipment stuff, not just for your air force, but for the armed forces as a whole.

The numbers in both personnel and ships, alongside the budget, don't really show me that's what the lad was going for.

Of course I might be wrong, but I heavily doubt that this case would be like the Sepah navy

Slapping some fish on enemy vessels isn't effective, given that you'd be feeding the enemy.
HEY, Thromsa's Navy would appreciate the free food ;)

With Roendavar being Roendavar, just about anything, from a gust of wind to some water spashes, is highly effective against Roendavar.

I just want to give you an in-region point of reference via myself. To quote my Air Force factbook "... the United Republics Ministry of Defense claiming to have over 300 aircraft. The United Republics Air Force has 202 combat aircraft in service, with the majority being 125 Torchwood F/A-7 Gargoyle and 47 Gaelfighter Tempest."

Or to nail the point in further, my Navy which has, as far as I've recently counted, under 70 combat vessels, likely under a hundred to account for other duties the navy has to perform.

And I'm considered to be at the very least a middle power within Gael, let alone the Isles at large. And that's for a nation with 27 million inhabitants and a $45 billion defense budget.

The United Republics Air Force (Dutch: Republikeinse Luchtmacht, French: Armée de l'air Républicaine) is the air and space force of the United Republics Defense Forces. It was formed in 1914 as the Service Aéronautique, a service arm of the Doraltic Army, and then made an independent military arm in 1937, becoming the Doraltic Air Force. The number of aircraft in service with the United Republics Air Force varies depending on the source, with the United Republics Ministry of Defense claiming to have over 300 aircraft. The United Republics Air Force has 202 combat aircraft in service, with the majority being 125 Torchwood F/A-7 Gargoyle and 47 Gaelfighter Tempest. As of 2020, the United Republics Air Force employs a total of 10,114 regular personnel. The reserve element of the air force consists of 10,187 personnel, known as the Air Force Operational Reserve.

Like the remaining Doraltic Uniformed Services, the chief of the Air Force's staff is a member of the United Republics Joint Chiefs and is subordinate to the President and Minister of Defense.

Overview
The United Republics Navy is the main power-projecting force of Dormill and Stiura. Naval history of Dormill and Stiura stretches back to the river fleets of the Ardedan Kingdoms and the lessons learned over centuries, especially during the Division Era of Doraltic history, alongside excellent and innovative ship design and construction bestows the nation with a potent navy capable of following a "Flexible Navy" doctrine adopted by the Second Stiuraian Republic to respond to naval threats from other regional powers, most especially those posed by Noronica.

The United Republics Navy does have the capability of significant regional power projection thanks to the possession of the Union, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, though it has only truly exercised this power within the Southern Sea, part of the United Republics' narrow, Gael-centric, foreign policy vision. For the most part, the Navy is focused on defending the coasts and shipping of Dormill and Stiura and her allies in Gael, even going as far as to lease space in the Luvtar Bay, Aruia to base several warships for easier access to the Southern Sea.

By law, the Navy also has a special obligation to the defense of the Territory of Swaneeak Atoll from the other claimants to the area, dedicating a permanent naval force to New Aquitaine for such ends. Otherwise, the Navy prefers to utilize its assets to respond to specific threats rather than dedicate the effort to making rigid units, thus task forces of the Navy (excepting Swaneeak) are created and disbanded on an ad-hoc basis.

Given that, however, the Navy still employs the use of Fleets as large-scale units, mostly to separate the expeditionary naval forces, such as the Union and her Carrier Battle Group, from the purely defensive forces.

Ships of the United Republics Navy

LinkUnion-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Union V501
Conceptualized by naval experts in the lead-up to Doraltic reunification, the Union-class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier was meant to be the crown of the new navy. It represents one of the most significant nuclear projects undertaken by the United Republics when she was laid down in 1992, and though she took well over a decade to complete, the Union remains the most significant naval asset in the possession of the United Republics.

LinkAoba-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Aoba C401 Decommissioned and Scrapped, Île de Haals C402, Collines de Altegene C403 Decommissioned and Mothballed
Built primarily by the Second Stiuraian Republic, the Aoba-class guided missile cruiser represents the best that naval engineering could offer during its era. Though construction of the class ceased at three ships, the class has remained prominent for its wide range of capabilities.

LinkRangi-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Rangi C404, Dufour Hill C405, Nord Sonnae C406
The post-reunification successor to the Stiuraian Aoba-class, the Rangi-class utilized then cutting edge technology in an effort to create a next generation cruiser, complete with a modern solution to naval gunfire support and the widest arrangement of missiles available to any Doraltic surface vessel.

Chery-class

Credit to Miklania for the drawing.
Ships of Class: Chery D301, Veaux D302, Altagene D303, Kapolder D304, Montrelais D305, Zuid Kapolder D306 (Launched), Launey D307 (Under Construction), Cour Rouge D308 (Ordered), Veldzicht D309 (Ordered), Rattenberg D310 (Ordered), Reading D311 (Ordered), Sud Alban D312 (Ordered)
The youngest ship class in the United Republics Navy, the Chery-class is a truly modern destroyer in every capacity, she was built to be multi-mission, but was gradually reigned in around an air and ballistic missile defense role. While still entirely capable of general purpose missions and even providing anti-submarine and surface warfare capacities in a restoration of some originally planned mission profiles.

Lukas Monet Sr.-class

Ships of Class: Lukas Monet Sr. F201, Rémy de Launey F202, Peter Hart F203, Aric Vroomen F204, Travis Agthoven F205, Haydn Lapointe F206, Raphaël Van Horn F207, Achille Van Houttum F208, Enzo Van Kapolder F209, Rudyard Abelen F210, Ed Smit F211, Lamar De Witte F212
Designed jointly by the United Dormillian Republic and Ostehaar, the Lukas Monet Sr.-class Frigate, named for the famed Doraltic General during the War of the Fourth Triumvirate, was the mainstay of multiple Gaeltic nations, and was praised for its then relatively cheap cost paired with the use of high-end Oster technology. Up until the 2010s, the Lukas Monet Sr.-class was the backbone of the United Republics Navy until the introduction of the Gael-class.

Gael-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Demain dès l'aube F213, Dans le vent F214, L'Eternité F215, Argean F216, Eterna F217, Nova F218, De wereld lag droog F219, De trommel F220, Nog acht minuten F221 (Launched), Fire Across the Heavens F222 (Launched), Of Duty and Obligation F223 (Sea Trials), Leave Her to Heaven F224 (Sea Trials)
The Gael is a class of sophisticated corvettes built for the naval forces of Ostehaar and Dormill and Stiura, as well as for export. The class is designed to function as a versatile, multi-role surface combatant able to engage both enemy surface and submarine vessels, as well as engage enemy aircraft. While being a relatively small ship, it still boasts the title of most heavily armed ship per square foot in the Western Isles, with a truly impressive array of naval offensive and defensive weaponry.

LinkDefender-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Defender S10, Counsel S13, Champion S14, Guardian S17, Paladin S18, Overseer S21
Developed in 2000 to fulfill the role of a light, non-nuclear attack submarine capable of quick underwater movement, at 20 knots, that can combat any ship it must. Its relatively small size and even smaller crew makes the Defender-class among the most cost-effective warships in the Navy.

LinkKapolder-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Kapolder S11, Ardeda S12, Dormill S15, Stiura S16, Zwolle S19, Feerwerd S20
Designed and built simultaneously to the Union-class, the Kapolder-class nuclear attack submarine is the result of another design drawn up from before reunification. The matter of which Republics should be selected for the names was of brief but hot political contention before it was resolved by having the two leading ships be named Kapolder and Ardeda.

LinkAvillon-class

Image is a stand-in
Ships of Class: Avillon S22 (Launched), Lieurneux S23 (Under Construction), Eppendorf S24 (Ordered), New Friesland S25 (Ordered), Annecy S26 (Ordered), Nicholas Favre S27 (Ordered)
Designed as the second generation of Doraltic nuclear submarines, and intended to fully replace the Defender-class, the Avillon-class of nuclear attack submarine is expected to mark the next step in Doraltic naval capabilities. Collaboration with OCES on designing and constructing the new reactor has reduced the cost of the class when compared to the Kapolder-class. The first boat, Avillon is expected to begin service in 2021.

I'm more of a hobbyist in this regard, but I might be able to help with that. Militaries seem pretty important to international relations here, so I was planning my own armed forces anyway, and the research is still fresh in my mind.

Ioudaia wrote:Yup. I've been in the region for a year, and I'm still at the "what do I need??" stage.

I'll throw in some advice that I've been personally using with both D&S and French Charbagnia to determine the makeup of a military. It boils down to three fundamental and related questions.

1. What do you need your nation's military to do? Do you need it to simply defend the homeland, or do you need to use it to project your power abroad. If the latter, how far? If the former, against what/who?
2. What do you have access to in order to build your military? How much manpower can you tap into, what kind of equipment do you have available, what is the general quality of both?
3. What are your limitations? Is there some kind of treaty of law that prevents your military from having or doing something? How about other restrictions based on your internal culture or politics? What about any monetary restrictions?

You should be able to get the most fundamental details of your military down on paper with this, from there it's adding on details.
