That's why you shouldn't believe the manufacturer in USA. Yes it is called "lead". In Dutch it's even in the name "Potlood" where lead is translated as "Lood". But is really is grafite.
In 1900 the original lead pencil was replaced bij grafite/ clay mixture.
Which is nice because lead is kinda toxic. That's why lead isn't allowed in paint or toys for children.
