Today is the anniversary of the Hindenburg Disaster. On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship caught fire over New Jersey, in the US, while attempting to dock at the air station there.

Notable was the anguished eye witness reporting of radio broadcaster, Herb Morrison, who was on the ground during the disaster:

(the event occurs ~2min into the audio file)

Also notable was the inspiration for the greatest rock band in history (fight me): Led Zeppelin. Their debut self-titled album displayed a stylized image of the iconic photograph of the disaster:

Nice. Now you can set your nation's official religion as the Dark Cult True Church of the Panther. How fortunate for you.

Fight me, he says. OK. I understand that Led Zeppelin was a groundbreaking rock band. Greatest in history? Not to my ears. I've always found their early albums painfully unlistenable. They got better. They did some good songs, and matured into second-raters. Good for them.

All of the Beatles, the Who and the Waterboys tower above them. And if I can widen the definition of band to include single artists, I can throw in Bob Dylan and Al Stewart.

Picking a single "greatest" is hard. I'm sure I've left out some bands and artists that deserve consideration. But Led Zeppelin is not among them.

Which gave us that same memorable line in WKRP's Thanksgiving Turkey Episode.

Mmm. Zeppelin were good, they were also gigantic rip off merchants, I suppose every band has done that to an extent, but LZ definitely did it more than most. On the plus side they did have the greatest rock drummer in John Bonham. They’re definitely better than The Rolling Stones, I’ve just never got into them for some reason.

I concede the fight immediately :P

I do think they were the coolest rock band of that "classic rock" era, though. Perhaps surpassed by Hendrix, for pure raw charisma and style.

How about: Band that has fallen furthest from grace? When I was growing up, no one was cooler than Zeppelin (at least in some circles). But even that was a declined state, it seemed, from the '80s. And today? Who talks about Zeppelin anymore? It's hard to imagine them as those same Rock Gods...

However, despite all of that, I simply must demand satisfaction for this statement of yours:

I wont argue their...borrowing from other artists, lol. But I will say they did it better. They should have just acknowledged it from the get-go. I think, if they'd been up and coming today, they'd have been more open about it. As it's a much more accepting climate, in those regards.

Good call with Bonham. Shame about his early death...I'd have liked to see him collaborating later in his career, as did the other members.

I was once fortunate enough to see Them Crooked Vultures live -- a group combining John Paul Jones on bass, Dave Grohl on drums and vocals, and the frontman from Queens of the Stone Age on lead. They weren't perfect, but man did they rock. Just solid hard rock and roll, from start to finish. One of the best concerts I've seen.

Well, now I would like to see the little half-dwarf progeny of that union. Given Snow White's sort of bland, Neutral Good, and Grumpy's more Chaotic Good, I'm going to guess he'd be raised to be Chaotic Neutral. Unless you give more credence to Nature than Nurture. If that's the case, the bloodline of the Seven Dwarfs is mighty chaotic, given the wide variety of personalities, so who knows what could result.

For me, every Led Zeppelin album has been a good album. However, they should not be on any list of the greatest rock artists, even for their period. For that period, the best should be considered to be of the likes of Captain Beefheart, David Bowie, Talking Heads EtC.

Wait, you guys actually don’t think Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock acts of all time? They have so many good songs. Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song, Ramble On, Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love, D’yer Mak’er, Fool in the Rain. These are all rock classics, how can you not consider Led Zeppelin one of the greatest of all time?

Sadly, we are surrounded by Philistines, Norg. Philistines and Luddites and Vandals and Troglodytes, and all other peoples who have kindly lent their names to such insults. Woe to us, that we must sit around the hearth and share our stew with folks who deny the greatness that is Zeppelin. Poor, poor us. At least we know the truth...

I think they were good, not great. I do like some of their tunes - Black Dog, WTLB, Gallows Pole and Trampled Underfoot. LZ like The Beatles didn’t go on forever, admittedly due to the death of John Bonham. But at least they aren’t the Stones... 👴🏻

Panther wrote:Sadly, we are surrounded by Philistines

I see myself more as a stoic. 😛 There was a lot of great bands during that era. Black Sabbath were awesome, they basically invented a new form of music, did LZ do that? Nope.

By accepting the fact that there is no objective standard for quality in art. I really cannot stand to hear Whole Lotta Love, but I accept that you have a somewhat different musical esthetic than I do. You probably have never heard Ethnicolor I (by Jean-Michel Jarre), and I admit it is not rock'n'roll by any sane definition of the term, but I think it is simply wonderful. As I say, you've probably never heard it, but I suspect you might not even call it music. More like "what the hell is THAT?" It fits my esthetic, and it probably misses yours. (If you want to hear it, just to experience it, listen to the full 12 minute version from Zoolook, not the abridged version on his greatest hits.)

Exactly. They should have split up sometime in the 70s. They’re their own tributes act, tribute act now.

Yep. They were awesome. The non Ozzy stuff just doesn’t cut it with me, but they had ten or so great years, even their last album just before they quit was good.

In case you and anyone else is interested:

The Dawn of Metal - Sound Opinions
https://www.soundopinions.org/show/144

That's a music/culture/history show I used to listen to quite frequently, they discuss current music but also do these long "features" that explore larger topics, such as this history of heavy metal. Even if you don't agree with all of their conclusions, it's really fun to listen to them.

They place the earliest fumbling origins with Lemmy, before he was in Motorhead, with a band called Hawkwind that I knew nothing about, and a song called "Silver Machine." And give credit to Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused," and especially the bass and drums, for creating the right kind of atmosphere that actual metal could grow within. But they freely admit that everyone can have their own choice. And they single out Black Sabbath as the true first band that can be indisputably called "metal," and credit them with birthing a new genre.
