House Passes Sacramental Tax with Republican Amendment A contentious debate concluded in the House this evening as the final amendments were attached to the controversial Sacramental Taxation Bill, which was initially proposed by the left-wing Socialist Party of America. The bill was co-opted by the government after the Huckabee Report, which was released in October, revealed that up to a quarter of religious organizations and churches in the UAR were assisting the terrorist Patriot Movement financially.
Speaker Murphy accepted a Republican amendment into the bill early this afternoon in an attempt to deter conservative opposition, which included President Romney, a devout Mormon. The amendment, sponsored by Indiana representative Joseph Hollingsworth, permits tax exemptions to those religious groups and organizations who present proof of financial investments into their respective localities.
The bill is set to be voted on by the Senate early next week, where it is expected to pass in a close vote. President Romney has hinted that the amendment would remove his opposition to the bill, although he added that he was still uneasy with the taxation of churches in principle.
