The Golden Sun Empire of Xiomera

Our final Z-Day results:

Infected: 0.0% (zero zombies, 826 billion survivors)
Z-Rating: -10.3 Safe Haven
22nd for Most Survivors
15th for Most Survivors + No Zombies

Considering the last-minute nature of this year's Z-Day, the multiple curves thrown at us (shutting down research, reopening borders on us, etc.) and the deliberately misleading "news" that was part of the event, I think our performance was quite excellent. I second Gardavasque in thanking everyone that was involved in this year's effort. It was an exceptional display of staying focused, sticking to the strategy and working together to push back the zombie hordes. Congratulations, everyone!

England goes back into 'lockdown' later this week, for at least around one month & possibly longer, so I might be forced to take another break from NS. :(

Anyway, here are a few more suggestions & questions about regional ecosystems for people to consider:

LAERAL: 'Chinese Lacquer Tree' (Toxicodendron vernicifluum) & 'Szechuan Pepper' (Zanthoxylum simuaus), under local names.

SCIONGRAD: 'Strawberry Tree' (Arbutus unedo), 'Medronho' in Portuguese, and maybe the 'Aguardente de Medronho' liqueur that's distilled using its fruit.

UNITED NEW ENGLAND: for the 'seasonal' forests & wooded savanna inland_ Corkbark trees, Blueleafs (endemic Conifer family, with leaves -- long, narrow ones -- rather than needles), Blackwood (or Black Oak, actually a different family to Oaks, but same Order; Ebony-like timber... NOT in large clumps).
Your Turkey substitute is the bird that I'm calling 'Western Peacock-Pheasant'. Local name = ?
'Bar-tailed Mousebird' is the species around Mint Trees... & houses.

The United Federation of Slokais Islands

Hello Everyone, Sorry I have not been active much in Regional Affairs but I have done a lot of work in the wiki including some work about the upcoming Slokasian election of 2020. I will be posting the results here on December 31st. Here is the link

OOPS! It's the 'Corkbarks' which have their own family in that Order: The 'Blackwood', or 'Black Oak', just as a genus of their own in the same family as the "true" Oaks, Beeches (but not 'Southern Beeches', which also have their own family in this Order), and 'Chestnuts' (but not 'Horse Chestnut', which is in a different Order)...

Order: Fagales
Family: Fagaceae = Beeches, "true" Oaks, 'Blackwood' (genus = Nigroquercus; endemic to Earth-IDU , Chestnuts.
Family: Brachydendriaceae = 'Corkbarks' (endemic to Earth-IDU).
Family: Nothofagaceae = Southerm Beeches (in Argentina, Chile, & New Zealand).
Family: Juglandaceae = Walnuts, Pecan, Hickory, Butternut.
Family: Betulaceaae = Birches, Alder, Hazel, Hornbeams & Hop-Hornbeams.
& a few less well known families.

Sorry for taking a long time to reply; I haven’t been very active on this site lately, mostly due to busyness. Your suggestions look good. Maybe the name of the Western Peacock-Pheasant would be shortened to Peapheasant?

I quite understand about busyness: Been there, done that...

Okay, I'll add those species to the forum thread about your nation's ecosystems when I have time. "Peapheasant", okay: I'll try to post a description of this (which is in my hand-written notes) next time that I'm on, which should be next Monday. I have about a hundred other species (around half of them birds) whose ranges extend into your territory, too...
For now, what do you think about a 'Flying Anteater'? Basically, take the RL 'Silky Anteater', give it patagia (the flaps of skin between its legs on each side that let it glide), turn it into a marsupial, and make its prehensile tail strong enough for the animal's normal sleeping position to be hanging head-down by this (so that, if threatened, it can just let go & glide away...): Scientific name = Dougaldixonia volans. :)

Karen-free zones? Oh, President Kreider will want to talk to the manager about that!

Also, in breaking news: our small island homeowners' association officially declares its independence. The island is finally ours! Freedom is never given, it is won! Caveat emptor!

Laeral, your nation's officials no longer hold any jurisdiction over our islands, and every single one stationed here is hereby relieved of their authority...all six of them, especially the two officers of the Gendarmerie. But they're welcome to stay as our guests until the next ship leaves the island in January. We'll keep them comfortable and include them in our upcoming holidays, no worries, unless they attempt to exert any control over the island. Well, except the doctor, she can keep practicing in the interim, along with her assistant, we've got a lot of retirees here...and if the teacher would keep class in session until the end of the term, that would be great..same with his classroom aide, it's really nice having those two around, the kids love them. But we've got our eye on those two Gendarmerie officers, just in case...

Official news on our independence was picked up by the IDU newswire: https://theidu.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2232

Thanks, that idea sounds great! Silky anteaters are adorable. I also like the fact that this species will be named after Dougal Dixon, since I always found his work interesting.

Both of the gendarmes will be quite sorry to leave in January; they've been rather enjoying their assignment to a relaxed tropical island rather than working counter-terrorism or security back in Laeral. But we'll gladly toast your independence and get right to work on figuring out the nature of our bilateral relations going forward. No hard feelings about the whole court case thing. :)

I'm also really enjoying reading the newsthread, which is in the form of an HOA email chain-- speaking as someone who lives in a community with an HOA, the formatting and tone is spot-on! It's quite funny.

The ✨Interstellar Commonwealth✨ of United New England

Quintessence of Dust, I am amused and intrigued by your name. I’d love to learn more about your nation.

The Democratic States of Quintessence of Dust

A (rather out of date) wiki can be found here: http://archive.nswiki.org/index.php?title=Quintessence_of_Dust

The specific origin of the name was:

...it was based on the rebels in the pre-QoD nation passing notes written on scraps of paper torn out of books, and the note that gave the order to begin the revolution was written on a page from Hamlet featuring the Quintessence of Dust speech...
