Fun Fact Friday!!!! This one is especially bad for fish lovers, and if the numbers weren't so astonishingly high I don't think it would be a very good fact but ... the numbers are *really high* ...
If you buy fish in the United States, be wary of what it is labeled - especially if you are getting Red Snapper or Tuna. Red Snapper is mislabeled in stores and restaurants in the US an astonishing 87% of the time, according to a mid-2010's study by The Atlantic. A whole slew of other fishes are mislabeled as Snapper, but given the stunningly high percentage of mislabeling I'm not sure why you'd ever order or buy this as you won't be getting what you ordered!
Even more stunning, however, is that 59% of tuna in the US - apparently especially in sushi restaurants - is not in fact tuna. And indeed it is likely to be a fish called escolar which ... has some unpleasant digestive effects. You're likely to be fine with the tuna you purchase in cans at the store, but be very wary of sushi and other restaurant purchases.
Oh, yeah, this was supposed to be a Fun Fact, right ... uh ... well ... it's fun because now if you're in the US you'll maybe be more likely to order something that isn't an imposter food!
