I look forward to hearing from Princeps Luzica with details about the construction of an Achaian embassy on Vermell. With your government’s permission, my Anassa intends that I act as her official ambassador upon the completion of that embassy. Is that acceptable to the Technocracy?”

"Very much so," Aric responded "It would be most acceptable for you to become the ambassador as you, technically, now know the most of our people and planet. It is our culture to give those the most astute in their fields high positions. Since you're the first of your race to come and see our world, that high position should fall to you. As for an embassy, our embassies with the Var Republic and the Sakoor are built here, in the city of Altair, near Debesis spaceport. You should have passed over it on your way here."

Anatolias nodded in acknowledgment, allowing himself a measure of relief in knowing that he had finally achieved what he had intended to do when he first left the Megaron so long ago. “I thank you for your vote of confidence, Prime Princeps. I shall report to my Anassa that the Technocracy of Vermell has agreed to the establishment of an Achaian embassy and to a continued diplomatic relationship with the Achaian League. As soon as we are through with our discussion, I will be sure to tour the embassy neighborhood to determine the lay of the land.”

The newly-named ambassador paused before adding, “On that subject, Prime Princeps, I feel it necessary to reiterate that my Anassa seeks to contact the other nations of the Verma Cluster as soon as her representatives are able to do so. In the coming days, I will seek to contact the ambassadors of the Var Republic and the Sakoor that are present here in Altair, so as to determine their willingness to more direct and formal contact through the arrival of a direct Achaian representative, in the same manner that I have come to you. As your governors have already warned me of the potential for trouble in making overtures to the Var Republic, and to the Sakoorans to a lesser extent, I wish to keep you informed, in the hopes of alleviating any potential for tensions within your capital.”

[This meeting is taking place prior to my in-person negotiations with Sakoor, as it was my ambassador to Vermell that was going to make the arrangements for that visit.]

"This would be most appreciated ambassador. Altair is meant to be a city for all Vermelly, and now other races as well, to live in peace. The Varen embassy, I might warn you, is opposed to surprise diplomatic visits. So I will relay the news of your arrival to them firs and secure a meeting time. The Sakooran, however, are much more open to such meetings."

Aric pressed a button on a small device around his wrist, paging one of his aids. "I need you to contact the Diplomatic Ministry, tell them to send a relay to the Varen embassy," he said into the device "we want to organize a diplomatic meeting between us and one of our new extraterrestrial allies."

“I am grateful for your assistance, Prime Princeps,” the Achaian ambassador said after his host’s message was sent. “It will likely be some time before my Anassa’s additional representatives arrive in the Verma Cluster, but, as you say, there is no point in surprising those with whom we wish to speak if there are alternatives. If we are to have trouble negotiating with the Var Republic already, we would be extremely foolish to make our mission even more difficult than it already needs to be.”

Ambassador Anatolias shook his head with a smile. “Not at the moment,” he replied. “I will be sure that my Anassa knows just what friendship and understanding your government has offered up here today, and will see to it that the Achaian League offers the same consideration to the Technocracy of Vermell for as long as our friendship lasts.” The ambassador got to his feet and reached out to shake the Vermelly’s hand. “I will return to the Preparation Ita until such time as the Achaian embassy is prepared here in Altair; it will serve as a temporary embassy for at least that long. I will return once I hear word of your message to the Var embassy.”

Anatolias nodded with a smile, and didn’t bother to remind his host that, as the new ambassador to the Vermell, he had no intention of taking the Preparation Ita out of Vermell’s orbit, as it would be acting as the Achaian embassy until the permanent structure in Altair was completed. “Thank you again, Prime Princeps, for your friendship and your assistance,” the ambassador said. “I look forward to working with you in the future.” With that, Anatolias turned to the open door and began the trek back to his shuttle, which would then take him back to the Nisaia-class carrier in orbit above the planet.

"What We Stand For..."

Soviet Central Situation Center, Roturna, The Techno-Union of Soviet Socialist Republic

Boris sat quietly with his palms folded together, leaning back in his highbacked chair whilst observing the viewscreen ahead of him. The dim blue glow cast sharp shadows across the faces of every man and woman in the room, and an uncomfortable silence loomed like the specter of death. Seated at the conference table before Boris were half a dozen high ranking generals, admirals, and advisers. In addition, several gaunt faced, scientists sat with their eyes cast to the floor. It was on their behalf this meeting had been convened, a meeting frankly everyone had hoped would never come. Almost all eyes were on the scientists, but Boris had set his eyes more firmly on the viewscreen. The horrifying conditions that League citizens lived under, the abject barbarity of it all... He had hoped that now that the Cold War had ended he could relax, but fate had other ideas.

"General Raptor..." Boris said quietly, looking at the Joint Chiefs. "Have the KGB confirm this information, if it checks out activate War Plan Crimson."

"Sir?" Raptor asked. "The Achaian's are our allies. I realize this isn't an ideal situation, but we must preserve the alliance-"

"No... I've seen our analysis of the Achaian's defense spending, there's absolutely no excuse for them to exist in such squalled conditions." Boris said sourly, looking at the scientists that had defected from Honorias and Propolyn. "The secrecy of the League makes far more sense now." His eyes turned back to the advisers. "For half a decade the Techno-Union has made peace with states that would see us destroyed... Now, even our most trusted ally appears entirely antithetical to our values." He stood, walking towards the viewscreen and pointing to a map of the League. "This about more than helping our fellow man... The League is EXACTLY the kind of state that would advocate the type of attacks carried out on our soil by the CAS and countless others. You all remember the cost of allowing the CAS to fester. I cannot, I WILL NOT, allow such a threat to exist again. You have your orders, carry them out!"

"Yes, sir."

NEWS FROM THE TECHNO-UNION

WAR!

Tensions between the League and the Techno-Union flared several weeks ago. Following the defection of several Achaian citizens to the Soviet Embassy on Propolyn Station, the full extent of what those defections entailed has become evident. Additional defections by scientists on other military R&D installations confirmed reports of appalling conditions within the Achaian League, which has maintained a strict border security policy since it's discovery. Accounts of of the brutal treatment of Achaian soldiers at the hands of their own government has leaked to news sources. Over the past few weeks this has sparked outrage among Soviet citizens that such a state would be allowed to ally itself with the Techno-Union. Statements given by the State Ministry of Defense allude to a sense of rising concern about the Western Neighbor following the collapse of the Accord some months ago.

Public opinion has rapidly shifted against the League following the leaked accounts and reports of apparent slavery, with many Soviet citizens demanding the Techno-Union take action to defend itself. An emergency session of the National Council met on Roturna to address the issue, the Council returned with a petition to the High Councilman to institute the recently passed 'Catherine Act'. In accordance, the Soviet military fully mobilized for the first time since the end of the Cold War, doing so without officially informing other members of the Center Pact. Today, Soviet Forces launched an invasion of the Achaian 'mainland'. Forces deployed from bases in the Socialist Republic of Uchub, as well as Ekos and several other undisclosed installations set up under the recently partially declassified 'Operation Vineyard'.

Security Forces at the Soviet Embassy on Propolyn seized control of the station with the aid of mercenaries working aboard trade vessels, taking numerous Achaian prisoners. The operation went smoothly. Meanwhile, Soviet forces stationed at Honorias managed to seize control of the installation, capturing much of the Achaian's fleet command. League forces in the system attempted to resist, but their ships were ultimately crippled by their high level of automation. With their command systems firmly in the hands of Soviet forces, the most powerful ships in the Achaian Armada were rapidly boarded and disabled.

Fighting elsewhere is still ongoing, with Soviet Naval forces clashing against defense fleets in orbit above several League planets. Sevastos appears to be the only planet lacking a defensive fleet, and as such has more easily been brought to heal. There the promise of fair treatment, food, clean water, and medical treatment has enticed many Achaian conscripts to surrender to Soviet forces. This appears likely to be the bloodiest conflict the Techno-Union has faced since first arriving on the Galactic stage, but Defense Ministry personnel seem optimistic. While many Achaian troops appear willing to die rather than surrender, much of the civilian populace has welcomed Soviet forces and the aid that comes with them. One thing is certain, however, and that is that the Center Pact as it currently exists will likely cease to exist assuming its other members do not back the Soviet invasion.

The future remains unclear for the northern portion of the Galaxy, but the Techno-Union has issued a statement informing the other nations of the Galaxy that League has been designated a Combat Zone, and any interference within that zone will NOT be tolerated.

More news as the story develops. Glory to the Techno-Union.

Abrupt Changes in Military Doctrine and Lessons from the League

His communication with the Achaian Ambassador to the Republic would prove fruitful, so much as so that the President had a realization. The scale in which the Secession Wars and the Revolution occurred were minuscule compared to the grander battles and conflicts of interstellar society. The lessons learned from there would be quite useless at this point. The military had to be armed and trained in such a manner to repel attacks from civilizations that were, perhaps, tens of thousands of years older, battle hardened and wrought with centuries of scientific, technological, tactical, and doctrinal advancement with regard to the cosmos.

As such, many things had to change if the Republic is to be properly defended.

Firstly: the Navy and the Space Corps. Initially, his foremost military advisors and the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces considered an emphasis on the Carrier vessel, to house wings of space fighters, and to be incorporated into battlegroups and strike forces. Indeed, this now proved to be problematic with regard to the scale of battlefields. They would be larger now more than ever with the introduction of the galactic theater, and certainly, the prospect of colonizing beyond Helios was becoming increasingly apparent. This meant battles tens of times more massive than the skirmishes of the Secession and Revolutionary Wars. Instead, his advisors, bearing in mind the suggestions Ambassador Aischylou, offered a transition from the Carrier doctrine towards the Battleship, Heavy Cruisers, and other types of large capital ships, while implementing carriers instead for support. In addition to his, these capital ships would sport their own complement of space fighters. Smaller vessels, such as frigates, destroyers, and corvettes would be rendered into escort roles for transports, supply ships, cargo, and among others. If need be, they would be applied in battlegroups as a secondary support, guarding the carriers of the Navy. With that settled, it would be passed onto the first session of the newly established Grand Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Defense, while the Chiefs of Staff were to handle this transition with regard to doctrine.

Secondly: the purchase of Achaian League ships for the purpose of defense. Not entirely knowledgeable of the finer details on galactic warfare, Dewitt once again approached Ambassador Aischylou regarding the basic composition of the ideal space fleet. That is, in reference to the mentioned Void Fleets. Of course, with respect towards the sensitivity and confidentially of such information, the President would not ask any further if they were refused the data. Furthermore, aware that the relationship between the League and the Republic was still in its infancy, Dewitt inquired Aischylou regarding the possibility of acquiring foreign combat advisors for military training, organization, and counseling on matters of the Armed Forces.

Thirdly: the development of faster-than-light drives for interstellar travel. Indeed, it was simply much more easier to purchase warp drive units rather than develop their own designs and prototypes, which would likely take years or decades to perfect. But relying on foreign technology and product, and not Zeon’s own, would not bode well for domestic businesses and industries. Perhaps now, it was small sacrifice to pay, but ramifications of such a decision await in the future. Reverse engineering the purchases drives would be a longer process as well, but relatively shorter than inventing their own means of FTL travel. And so, it was agreed upon by the Joint Chiefs of Staff that warp drives were to be purchased initially for the Armed Forces in the form of military acquisition. For that matter, everything will have to be modeled and structured around foreign weaponry and technology. Dewitt, however, was hopeful, that the businesses of Zeon would strive regardless. This was, after all, only a temporary measure.

After their place on Helios was secured, the race to colonize the stars would be at hand. The warp drives would be a necessity in the coming years.

Dewitt would ask once again regarding a list of preferred classes of ships, technologies, and other weaponry that could be incorporated into the military within a reasonable period of time, and within budget limitations.
