Like I said, Putin's smart. Even if he(but honestly I think Putin wouldn't be comfortable with anyone besides a Native Russian in charge) became leader and his rule was exactly like his there'd still be a succession problem. Besides, I think Putin would actually prefer a Russia that can survive without a strongman leader. Where authority isn't just in one person. Course that's for a Russia without him, he still likes his current power.
