The Semi-Direct Democracy of Oceara

Not even a week into living in the new place and already heard a burst of five gunshots. Fun. Guess I'll find out later on the news what that was about.

Oh my, quite a lively new neighborhood by the looks of it...

Stay safe! Hopefully you're feeling a bit better after the work incident as well.

Feeling much better now that I've had my two days off to catch up on rest. I'll definitely endeavor to stay safe, I've no desires to have another close call like I've had several years back. I don't go outside at night, I always lock the door, I always have at least one light on, I don't live on the ground floor, and I keep pepper spray on me. I plan on getting a replacement pocket knife too for my old broken one, although that's more for the convenience of having one that's a multi tool in your pocket than for self defense purposes.

The Vanlikian government has instituted several programs to better the life of its citizens, to try to live up to the standards of the revolution. All Vanlikian citizens will receive a free telescreen, an interactive TV used for the transmission of news and entertainment to all homes across Vanlik. Free goods known as Victory goods will be made available freely to all citizens; such items include Victory Cigarettes, Victory Serum -a supposedly Regenex-like product-, Victory Vodka, Victory Gin, Victory Coffee, and Victory Tea. There are also measures being taken to create free personal vehicles, Victory Cars and Victory Shuttles...

A group of Orsonian linguists from the University of Medan have proposed the adoption of Revolutionary Speech as the official language of Orson, replacing Modern Auruk (which they have derisively referred to as "Imperial Speech").

These linguists believe that adopting RevSpeak would erase all counter-revolutionary concepts and terms from the Orsonian lexicon, including racist or authoritarian terms heavily associated with the Empire, and reverse centuries of "linguistic imperialism" throughout the Orsonian world caused by Orsonian settlers introducing the Auruk language at the expense of indigenous languages. This has attracted some support within the Communist Party.

The Orsonian Language Institute, an agency responsible for regulating Modern Auruk, has strongly opposed any attempts to reform it or introduce RevSpeak. Its members are currently lobbying the Federal government to prohibit the use of RevSpeak in any government agency, arguing it is an attempt at censorship and the stifling of free expression, and that it is a direct attack on Orsonian cultural heritage.

Hello everyone!

I beefed up the UCP Judiciary factbook with some new information following recent canon alterations and the implementation of the Montevideo Statute. This includes a section outlining each of the UCP special rapporteurs, some of whom have not been named yet. In other cases, the investigations have stalled or the focus of regional canon has since moved on to other events.

If anybody was interested in reviving any of the three open UCP investigations, you are welcome to take the reins and simulate an outcome.

Maybe NS should hire the Administrator to run their data centre... they'd be backing up entire realities to the cloud

And even tho you addressed that to Oceara, I couldn't agree more...especially in this day and age where technology and electronic media is becoming so much more the norm, you definitely need to make sure tou have someone who can oversee your systems to avoid this type of issue...

I'm glad you're doing alright, I'm doing well enough. Moved into a nicer place close by where I, my mother, and my best friend now roommate all work and which is close to a bunch of businesses. Although there's some rough spots along with the good, our workplace is renovating but is insistent on staying open the whole time so we have to wear dust masks to try and minimize the amount of concrete dust that we breathe in.

The Special Rapporteur on Political Repression in Tsarist Lucija is the Honorable Ismail Omar Guelleh. He is a well known lawyer and Former Chief Justice for the Supreme Court of Federal District of Djoubiti. He is at the UCP Court in Geneva annoucing his findings.

"Thank you all for coming. I want to thank you all for your presence here today. This is a big deal.

For the last year and a half, my team and I have spent our time investigating the political situation in Russia. We have cris-crossed continents and countries, interviewed witnesses, reviewed many documents/photos/videos, heard thousands of stories, shed many tears, and while trying to stay to true to our impartial mission.

We are here to reveal our findings:

We can confirm the existence of widespread political repression in Lucija, including several notable occurances.
These include pushing Rachinsky out of office in an manner that is illegal and going after Rachinsky polotical supporters, including with violent means.

Banning the political partipcation of anarchists and PPD-inspired communists.

The harassment and punishment for those who even have a hint of opposition to the Tsar. People who post on public platforms against the Tsar have reoprted various forms on punishment to include threats like exile, prison camps, threats of violence, or loss of their jobs.

We recommend corrective actions suchh as sanctions and are reffering the case to the courts for charges to be leveled against persons resposible for this including: Grand Duke Fyodor I, Prime Minister Zory Bichenko,

Oh and update on the whole gunshots thing I mentioned earlier. It turned out it was just a drunk guy showing off his impaired trigger discipline and impaired judgement on account of his inebriation and he got arrested but nobody was hurt.

Communist Party Membership Increases:

Communist Daily has reported that the Communist Party has reached a record high of 100,000,000 official members, with branches of the party now existing in every major Orsonian city. Reportedly, the party is enrolling 10,000 new members every single day.

The communists remain highly popular across Orson due to their investment in various social programs, actions to eliminate racial segregation, support for unions and labor reforms, and efforts to protect the fledgling republic from political violence by Aturorist sympathizers, anarchists, or other bad actors.

Demographically, the party's core membership consists of working-class Kāpok Orsonians and humans, groups who were discriminated against during Turner's regime. 10% of the party is composed of ex-Aturorists; some are opportunists who joined the communists to preserve their own livelihoods upon the Empire's collapse, while others were never sympathetic to the Aturorists but forced to join them out of social pressure or for their careers. The party is lacking in biological Orsonian members, many of whom stopped participating in the political system after the Conservative Party was banned in 2022, or otherwise vote for opposition candidates.

However, the communists' popularity still falls far short of the Aturorist Party, which achieved a peak membership of 500,000,000 people in 2020, or 20% of the Orsonian population. First Commissar Māia Akenehi hopes to surpass the Aturorists by 2030, and has ordered the investment of additional party funds into recruitment drives.

The sun beat down on Santa Catalina, hard and merciless. People stood under canopies, enjoyed ice cream from Cam Frutas or gelato from Santini’s, and crowded the pools and bars. Two women sat by a window and watched people rushing between shaded canopies or storefronts, dipping chips into salsa and queso. One was probably the richest woman in the hemisphere, or at least in the top four, a women whose beauty was matched only by her cunning and her excellent aim. The other was a noblewoman and a diplomat, a Charoda, the type of woman who could have stepped out of a Kolotchka noir, with legs up to there.
“So, how're things down in Santiago?”
Meredith took a sip of her margarita.
“Good, mostly. Business is good, of course. I met Natalia Usher the other day.”
Veronika’s eyes widened.
“Really? How was she?”
She had heard lots about the mysterious Usher clan, their enigmatic Malady that not even gene-engineering could fix, and how Natalia was a flighty eccentric. She’d never actually met her before.
“Crazy, jealous. Called me a whore.”
Veronika’s eyes widened further.
“What?!? Really???”
“Yes. I gave Francisco an ultimatum.”
“…he was there? Oh Saints, what happened?”
Meredith bit into a chip, leaving Veronika in suspense as she washed it down with another sip.
“I activated my blades. Her man, Pym, held a gun to my face, and Palmer held one to hers. My men at Francisco’s mansion had to intervene.”
Veronika looked shocked, her mouth almost agape. She turned to the next table, where Palmer was sitting with a plainclothes Blackwatch officer assigned to her protective detail.
“Is this true?!?”
Palmer nodded.
“I stared down the Pym f*cking Reaper himself. And I drew a bead on Usher’s forehead. Of course, I wasn’t going to fire unless he did.”
Kokarin stared at the corpo agent, bewildered. Her gaze shifted to Meredith, then back to Palmer. She took a very long sip of her martini, almost draining it before speaking.
“You are quite brave, Mr. Palmer. Or quite suicidal. I can’t tell which.”
Palmer smiled and lit up a cigarette with a snap of his fingers before taking a drag.
“I prefer to take calculated risks. Evolved or not, my cyberware can pull a trigger faster than he can, and even if she’s a Charodey, multiple bullets to the eye will still really hurt. 10 mil is a manstopper for a reason.”
Veronika stared, still astonished by this development, before sipping what was left of her martini and waving over the waiter for another. Meredith smiled, bemused by Veronika’s shock.
“In other news, I’m thinking of visiting Steinman for a faceplate touchup. Think I’ll modify my cheekbones, nose.”
“You? Getting plastic surgery? I thought your face was literally metal?”
“Of course not: there’s a layer of synthskin over the plating. I’ll get a custom faceplate made of course: Steinman has consultations and then sends the specifics off to us for manufacturing custom faceplates, etc.“
Meredith had a chip and a sip of her margarita as Veronika raised an eyebrow.
“So you’re going to get your face removed and put back on again? That sounds horrifying.”
“Not particularly; Steinman’s an expert. There are concerns, obviously, but it’s basically just a fancy facelift.”
“You don’t look especially concerned.
“You know I’m very good at hiding my true feelings. It’s an art.”
Veronika bit into a chip.
“Okay Taylor Swift.”
“I’m surprised you know who that is.”
“Oh please, I’m not clueless. Or at the very least I’m getting better.”
“If you ever tries to flirt with Francisco, I’m stabbing her.”
“Meredith!”
“…fine, with a fork. Non-lethal. In a cheek maybe? Can’t entrance men with a scar. I swear, every man she meets ends up becoming a break-up song. Are you sure she’s not like you?”
Veronika was bemused.
“No no. I don’t think there’s any Charodey in Tennessee. Is that where she’s from?”
She paused.
“Actually, there might be. The South sounds lovely, based on what I’ve heard from Henry: romance, pseudo-aristocracy, manners. I recently experienced New York charm entertaining a group of Timmian “diplomats”. It was utterly exhausting. Maybe their southern counterparts would be an improvement.”
Meredith smirked.
“Got your first taste of Timmian legalese? It has a distinctly dry and perniciously neutral taste to it, doesn’t it? They claim to be capitalists yet they don’t take a stand against communism? You’d think the CIA would be gleefully wrecking havoc in Orson. I’m somewhat disappointed in them.”
“Dry? Yes. Neutral? Not quite, they kept trying to get me to support certain minor UCP regulations that would benefit their particular companies. I politely brushed them off with a lot of “I’ll have to consider this in greater detail”, with no intention of ever doing so.”
Meredith drained her margarita and signaled for another.
“By the way, did I mention I got a new gun? Malorian special, a new gun that fires 12.7mm rounds. Semi-auto, with an eight-round magazine, recoil compensator, holo sight that links to my optics. Fires custom designed rounds: they have a hardened tip and a plasma jacket to punch through armor or biomass, and then the rest of the round fragments into shrapnel, ripping apart tissue. Paul assured me it’ll kill any commie in one shot.“
Veronika blinked twice and took another sip of her margarita.
“Whenever I think you have enough weapons, you get more.”
Meredith chuckled.
“You can never have enough guns my dear. One of the many lessons I learned in my years as a merc is that one can never have enough guns, or bullets. Of course, a gun is a tool of last resort: dead people don’t help me grow my market share or bring in additional revenue…unless we get into the funerary business. But that’s too morbid.”
Veronika just nodded, eating another chip with a crunch.
“Whatever you say. I’m a diplomat: my chief weapon is my voice and my mind. I make people dance to my tune by whispering to networks and friends, or by leveraging things to my advantage. Or by inviting people to my yacht. I’ll be displaying it in the air show.”
“Oh? Francisco will be showing off his airship and his Condor…he won’t stop talking about it. He has a grand entrance planned.”
“I’m not surprised. Will you be making a similarly grand gesture?”
“Certainly not.”
The two kept chatting and drinking, secure in the coolness of the cafe.
