Sciongrad emerged as a unified kingdom from several smaller city-states in the early 7th century as a proficient seafaring people. As nomadic agrarian folk realized the difficulties of establishing long term communities in the dense boreal forests and mountains of what would become Sciongrad, many moved towards the temperate coast, where they established thriving communities based on subsistence fishing. This dependency on the sea prompted the early Scionites to develop what would become a formidable adeptness at constructing naval vessels - a proficiency which remains relevant even in modern times.
Sciongrad currently has vast reserves of coal, petrolium, lumber, and natural gas, however, the environmentalist faction of the current government coalition has prevented extraction and deforestation of such resources, causing Sciongrad to rely heavily on the fishing and service industries. As the nation emerged as an industrialized nation in the early 19th century, the government introduced various labor-market reforms, creating the foundation for its current relatively developed mixed economy. The Scionite shield replaced its former currency - the crown - with the collapse of the of the nation's monarchy and the establishment of the current republic. Sciongrad ranks very highly in terms of social mobility and income equality, and maintains a welfare state with universal healthcare, subsidized higher education, and a comprehensive social safety net.
