Daemyrs
Daemyrs, officially known as as the Unified States of Daemyrs, or more informally as either the Unified States, or just simply as Daemyrs, is an island nation located on the southeastern Rostilian island chain of Kāinga. The country shares its northeastern border with Asera Maiwa, while the its other borders are coastal.
About 320 million people live within x square miles (x square kilometers) of Daemyrs. Daemyrs has a population density of x inhabitants for square mile (x/sq km). Over 65% of the Daemyrtian people live within its contiguous cities, while only 3% of its total population lives on the islands of Durmstad and Kynesland. Daemyrs' largest city is Drakeshold, while its capital is the city of Verkhoyansk.
Today, Daemyrs is a federal republic consisting of eleven states. The government is divided into three offices; an executive office, a legislative office, and a judicial office. The government devotes a majority of the federal budget to military applications, education, and infrastructure improvements.
Etymology
The name Daemyrs originates from the name of the first colony ship which had brought colonists to what is now Daemyrs, the Dae Maeras. A somewhat obscure name, "Dae Maeras" is said to be Brythonic for "beloved hound." The country is often referred to as The Unified States. This is intended to be a neutral description of the nation, showing that its many parts are one larger conglomeration.
History
Colonization
Daemyrs was originally founded in 1570 by Britannics seeking to escape religious persecution. Their ship, the Dae Maeras, was a converted merchantmen, and carried 120 settlers, 30 crewmen, and their supplies. By the time it reached Kāinga, in the spot that was to become Daemyrs, only 72 colonists and 13 of the crew were left alive. These survivors built a small fortified town, which they named Drakeshold. After a year and a half, the Dae Maeras set sail back to Britannia with 25 able-bodied men, to resupply and bring the next wave of colonists. The ship and crew were held by the government until it was decided by the king whether or not to allow a colony to exist independent of the crown. Finally, in 1578, the Dae Maeras was released and returned to the colony with 109 new colonists. Upon landing, the new colonists found that Drakeshold had grown to 147. This occured when the colonists allowed a local tribe of the Kāingese, the Dwaniyakahi Kāingamer, to join their settlement. These 256 men and women would become the bedrock of what would come to be known as Daemyrs.
Foundation
One hundred and twenty nine years after the foundation of the colony of Drakeshold, settlers from Britannia, as well as other nations, had immigrated to Drakeshold, leading her to become a thriving colony. Also created was the neighboring colony of Daemyrs, named in honor of the lost Dae Maeras, which was lost in a storm in 1599 of the coast of modern-day Ne'Threl. These two colonies, which were both founded independent of the Britannic Crown, merged into two states of the nation of Daemyrs, on the 14th of July, 1699, with the Declaration of the Foundation. This document, considered Daemyrs' first constitution, stated that the two colonies were to become one sovereign state, with the captial being the city of Verkhoyansk, in the state of Daemyrs.
Second Foundation
In 1862, the nation of Daemyrs, along with the neighboring nation of the Confederacy of Tyrae, as well as the colonies of Jeffords, Verghast, Sindus, Mephina, Galynus, Durmstad, and Kynesland, were beset with a simultaneous native uprising and invasion by northern Kāingese in response to mistreatment of certain tribes by the colonials. To combat this, a second constitution was written up in 1866, and under the Daemyrs Pact, the Unified States of Daemyrs was born. Formed by eleven semi-independent states, the fledgling nation was created to pool resources, and to create a unified military command structure for the eleven states. After the end of the Tribal Uprisings, as they were recorded in history, in 1870, the Daemyrs Pact was rewritten as The Constitution of the Unified States of Daemyrs. This is the move that created what we know today as the modern Unified States.
Early 20th Century
Up until the 1920s, the Unified States had experienced a period of growth and prosperity. This suddenly ended with the Great Daemyrtian Stock Market Crash of 1927. Caused by inflation and a market panic, this crash led to an eight year depression for the Unified States. The crash ended after five years under Executive Thomas Hahrald, a Liberal who created jobs under the Public Works Act of 1931. Under the PWA31, thousands of Daemyrtians were employed building dams, government buildings, parks, roads, and bridges. This organization lives on today as the volunteer organization Unified Builders. U.B. is the largest volunteer organization in Daemyrs, building homes and infrastructure in war-torn areas across the globe.
Geography
Daemyrs is located in southeastern Rostil. Geographically, it is divided into three regions: eastern, western, and the southern isles. The eastern and western regions are divided by a chain of mountains running from the Asera Maiwanese/Daemyrtian border at Verghast, through Sindus and Mephina. The eastern region, Tyrae, is made up of the states of West Tyrae, East Tyrae, and Mephina. The western region, Daemyrs, is made up of Verghast, Jeffords, Daemyrs, Sindus, Galynus, and Drakeshold. The third region, the islands, is made up of the states of Durmstad and Kynesland.
The highest point in Daemyrs is Mount Morrigan, in northern Verghast, with an elevation of 6683 ft.
Daemyrs rests in a geograpically safe portion of the world, with the nearest tectonic plate being the relatively inactive junction which created the Aseran mountain chain millenia ago. Tremors do occur, but most are too minor to be felt, and are detected by monitoring stations spread throughout the country.
Climate
Daemyrs has a subtropical climate, a result of its proximity to the Tropic of Capricorn. It experiences frequent tropical storms, and an active tornado season in the region of Tyrae, to the east of the mountains.
Environmental Issues
In the period of rapid economic growth after the Second Foundation to shortly before the '27 market crash, environmental concerns were downplayed by the government and industrial corporations; as a result, environmental pollution was widespread in Daemyrs, Sindus, and Drakeshold from the 1910s to the mid 1960s. Responding to rising concerns with issues arising from the problem, the government introduced several environmental protection laws from the 1970s onwards. Current environmental issues include urban air pollution, waste management, water purification, natural conservation, climate change, and chemical management. The government created the Office of Natural Resources to enforce the laws and manage assets for the protection of Daemyrs' natural resources.
Administrative Divisions
Mainland Daemyrs is divided into the two geographical/political regions, as well as nine states, which are divided into numerous counties, and further down into hundreds of cities, towns, and hamlets.
Each island state consists of a small population, each being a one-county island.
