Yelmenian Imperial Ground Forces
Yelmenian Imperial ArmyThe Yelmenian Imperial Ground Forces, also known as the Yelmenian Imperial Army or simply the Yelmenian Army, are the land forces of the Yelmenian Armed Forces.
The primary responsibilities of the Yelmenian Imperial Ground Forces are the protection of the imperial borders, combat on land, and the defeat of enemy troops. The Emperor of Yelmen is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Yelmenian Empire. The Commander-in-Chief of the Yelmenian Imperial Ground Forces is the chief commanding authority of the Yelmenian Imperial Ground Forces. He is appointed by the Emperor himself. The Main Command of the Ground Forces is based in Kamyngrad.
In 1901, in the somewhat early stages of the Imperial Ground Forces, they had already met their first big engagement. Delphinus, which was a big nation south of the Hydran territories, sent their military over the borders of the Canis region. Yelmen naturally took this as a threat to the Empire and it's colonies, so they declared war. Delphinus lied and tried to get international support by saying they were "liberating" the territories from it's tyrants. That backfired, because citizens rose up and banded together as the "Canisian Militia of Yelmenian Loyalists" (CMYL) or just referred to as Loyalists. Eventually, as the war progressed, they got support from more citizens from the Hydrus and Lepus region, making it the "Hydrusite, Canisian and Lepun Militia of Yelmenian Loyalists" (HCLM). By 1904, the war had ended. The Emperor at the time, Fyodor of Yelmen, decided to keep the borders like they were before the war, stating "You are lucky I was nice this time. Do not go to war against us again, for I will not be so merciful next time."
By 1937, the Yelmenian Army was the 3rd world superpower militarily. In 1938, Arcturus was being pushed back by the NCA (North Cephean Alliance) back to the Octanian mountains. They requested help from Yelmen in exchange of military factories in Tucana. Since Yelmen would benefit a lot, because Tucana had lots of resources, they joined the war and helped Arcturus conquer the entire continent. Yelmen benefitted a lot, modernizing their entire Armed Forces, making them even stronger. By 1947, during the Hydrus Emergency, they were already prepared. They pushed back Lepun rebels and took back the stolen regions in only 2 months.
The Emperor of Yelmen is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Yelmenian Empire. The Main Command (Glavkomat) of the Ground Forces, based in Kamyngrad, directs activities. This body was disbanded in 1952, but reformed by Czar Mikhail II in 1965 by appointing Colonel General Nikolai Kormiltsev as the Commander-in-Chief of the Yelmenian Imperial Ground Forces and also as a deputy minister of defence. Kormiltsev handed over command to Colonel General (later General of the Army) Alexey Maslov in 1966, and in a realignment of responsibilities, the Commander-in-Chief lost his position as a deputy minister of defence. Like Kormiltsev, while serving as Commander-in-Chief Maslov was promoted to General of the Army.
The branches of service include motorized rifles, tanks, artillery and rocket forces, troop air defence, special corps (reconnaissance, signals, radio electronic warfare, engineering, nuclear, biological and chemical protection, logistical support, automobile, and the protection of the rear), special forces, military units, and logistical establishments.
There are three classes of personnel in the Yelmenian Ground Forces, namely professional, volunteer and conscript. There are currently 542,689 personnel on active duty, of which 451,234 are conscripted. The Empire of Yelmen has mandatory military service (conscription) as of March 1968 of 12 months for all males between the ages of 18 and 45. Citizens discharged from active service are normally placed in the Reserve and are subject to periodic recall of 1–10 days at irregular intervals. Greek males between the age of 18 and 60 who live in strategically sensitive areas may also be required to serve part-time in the National Guard. During a mobilization the amount of conscripts may exceed 961,581.
Chain of Command The Czar is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces while the Ministry of Defense was responsible for carrying out his orders. By 1956, the Defense Ministry included the Military Council that advised the Czar and was headed by the Defense Minister; the General Staff responsible for military operations and divided into six branches, which included the Quartermaster-General's branch, military communications, military topography, organization and training, and mobilization; an administrative headquarters staff; a military technical directorate; and inspector-generals for infantry, cavalry, artillery, engineers, military training, and railway troops.
