1968 attempted assassination of Maksimilian van Grun
On July 2nd 1968, Charginian president Maksimilian van Grun was attacked and wounded in an attempted assassination. The perpetrator was identified as Johan Visker who had a history of supporting various anti-Van Grun groupsJohan Visker was born on November 10th, 1939 to a middle class family in Schlechtstadt. In 1956, at 17 years old, he first became involved in politics and became a strong critic of Maksimilian van Grun. He attended many anti-Van Grun protests throughout the 1960s and became controversial for his views. In June 1968, Visker decided to put forward a plan to assassinate the President after Van Grun announced he was cracking down on anti-government groups.
On July 2nd, Van Grun spoke at a rally in Schlechtstadt which was widely publicised. After the rally had concluded, Van Grun departed in the Presidential Car followed by a motorcade. Visker watched Van Grun closely and as the President departed, he started following him on his motorbike. Visker followed Van Grun for approximately 5 minutes. As Van Grun was driving on a highway, Visker suddenly sped up and drove right next to Van Grun's window. Visker then pulled out a pistol and fired 10 shots at Van Grun in rapid succession. 6 of the 10 shots missed, however the 4 shots that did hit Van Grun hit him in the shoulder and arm. Van Grun lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a lamp post. Van Grun's motorcade pursued Visker and eventually stopped him and immediately took him into custody. Van Grun was rushed to Schlechtstadt Hospital where he required surgery. Fortunately, Van Grun survived the assassination attempt.
Following the attempted assassination, Visker was immediately arrested and charged with treason. He was swiftly executed less than a week after the assassination attempt, on July 6th.
