Basic History of Hanzai City

During the period of decolonization in the Pacific, with many budding countries only now beginning to gain their footing in the world, the province of Hanzai became a heavily disputed area to those who bordered it, seeking to lay claim to it's bountiful resources that lay in it's dry deserts, dank rainforests, and vast oceans. To put it plainly, oil. These minor disputes between nations eventually broke out into small border conflicts, with armed patrols coming across one another. The aftermath and rubble of these events can still be found today in the outskirts of the city, where officials didn't bother to initiate repair programs. Countless lost their lives until eventually, these conflicts caught the eye of the World Assembly, who feared that the conflicts might explode into a large scale war. The WA had the nations involved sit down so that they may come to an accords, however these negotiations failed, and the violence continued. After many more failed attempts at peace, a decision was come too. Hanzai would become an independent nation, free to decide for it's own destiny. A democracy was established, and the Protectorate of the City of Hanzai was born. However, the aftermath was shown to have a devastating effect on the region, as collapsed buildings, and infrastructure was leading to a steady decline in economic stability. Hence, the WA sent over relief aids to help in the reconstruction effort. This led to the post-disaster economic miracle that has given birth to the prosperity of the region today, where it has become a hub of trade enterprise and entrepreneurship. However, during the chaos and fighting, many small criminal organizations rose to power in this time, and are still ever present to this day, and maintain a strong influence on politics through bribery and intimidation of rivals. Due to a lack of funding, police organizations struggle to combat these organizations successfully. Especially when those criminals are stuffing the pockets of those police, too.
