Martenyikan Defense Forces

The military of Martenyika numbers approximately 196,000 personnel across three branches. The largest branch is the Army, followed by the Navy and Air Force. Due to it's limited projection capacity, these branches primarily focus on guarding the nation's borders, airspace, and waters. The majority of Martenyika's military personnel are marked as reserve at this time.

History

The Martenyikan Defense Forces primarily trace their lineage back to the independence of Martenyika from the Íszkárí Confederation in 18??. King [name] first established the Royal Martenyikan Army and Royal Martenyikan Navy in [year]. These forces, along with the Royal Air Corps (established [year]) most notably served in the First Imperial War as well as the Martenyikan Civil War. As Martenyika transitioned into a Republic the Royal Armed Forces were collectively reconstituted into the Martenyikan Defense Forces, although certain vestiges of the monarchy have carried on in the traditions of modern forces.

Conscription

The Ministry of Defense administers a draft in order to fill quotas within the Defense Forces. According to the Declaration of the Republic of 1985, "the defense of Republic [of Martenyika] requires men and women to undergo basic military training." The draft is limited in scope, conscripting only a portion of the military aged populace into basic training and service for 12 months. Although it is possible for women to be drafted, it is less likely compared with their male counterparts due to differential quotas. Draftees are often referred to as "Cattys" or "Catty 4's" in reference to Category IV of the Martenyikan Declaration of the Republic.

The Martenyikan Army is the largest segment of the Martenyikan Defense Forces, accounting for roughly 184,000 total personnel. It's primary headquarters is centrally located near the capital city of Kessa. Most recently, National Guard soldiers as well as Mountaineers engaged in anti-organized crime raids in Hazhariland and elsewhere in Martenyika.

The Army comprises several subdivisions including regular Infantry Regiments, Mountain Battalions, Commandos, Airmobile Regiments, Armored Cavalry Regiments, Light Cavalry Regiments, and National Guard battalions. In times of war, the Gendarmerie numbering 17,600 personnel may be requisitioned for military duties, ultimately becoming subservient to the Army.

The Martenyikan Navy is the naval warfare branch of the Defense Forces. Besides maintaining military deterrence, the branch also regularly takes on maritime law enforcement duties such as anti-piracy patrols, as well as search and rescue at sea. The 7,000 strong Martenyikan Navy operates a total of 67 hulls, most of them being patrol craft and auxiliaries. This number also includes the Presidential yacht, which is maintained by the Navy. Since the declaration of the republic in the mid-1980s, Martenyikan naval vessels continue to use the prefix RMNS, standing for Republic of Martenyika Naval Ship, instead of the original Royal Martenyikan Naval Ship.

In 2015, the Navy announced its wishes to double Martenyika's frigate squadron from 2 to 4 within ten years. As a partner in the new Type 14 Frigate Project (headed by Domanania), Martenyika provided the 127 mm naval gun produced by FRM. Martenyika began production of its 2 planned Type 14s, the River class, in April of 2021.

The Martenyikan Air Force maintains a small fleet of aircraft oriented towards local air defense. Many of its fighter aircraft are multiroles, meaning that they can take on a variety of missions depending on how they are configured. The Martenyikan Air Force has sought more modern replacements for most of its aircraft for years, but redoubled its efforts in 2020. Martenyika purchased 20 Gryphes light multirole fighters from fellow Western Isles Democratic Alliance member Ioudaia in 2021, where they trained before transferring home, and planned to increase that number to 36 as of late 2023 with the acquisition of Doman models. As part of its modernization goals, the Martenyikan Air Force has also obtained several drones from its ally Domanania, and may obtain more in the future.
