Walloonian national football team
The Walloonia men's national football team (Welsh: Tîm pêl-droed cenedlaethol Walonai) represents Walloonia in international football. It is controlled by the WFA (Walloonian Football Association).Although various football teams have represented Walloonia at inter-Pacific football events, it was not until the nation gained its independence that a full football-governing body was set up. Before attaining its FIFA membership, the Walloonian football team was owned and operated by its players. The players chose the captain, and the captain chose the team's players. Every year between 1954 and 1973, Walloonia played its only game away to Wales and lost. After the onset of the Independence War, this annual visit stopped and has not been held since. In 1980, Walloonia successfully applied for FIFA and OFC membership, and they were placed in Group C of the AFC and OFC qualification for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Their first international match of the modern era was a 4-0 defeat to South Korea in Kuwait City. Ultimately, the team went nowhere and finished last in their initial group. Their first home match was a friendly against Samoa in May 1982, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. Their first win came three months later, in a 4-1 rout of Tahiti.
The country has participated in each of the OFC Qualifiers for the World Cup for which it has been eligible. In 2018, they advanced to the final round of OFC qualifying by winning Group A. The winner of the final match would advance to an inter-continental playoff to decide who would qualify for the final tournament, but Walloonia lost to New Zealand on penalties after a 1-1 draw. In 2022, however, Walloonia once again faced New Zealand in the final, but things were different because Walloonia won 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to advance to the intercontinental playoffs, then defeated Peru to advance to the World Cup for the first time in their history.
The nation's primary home stadium is the Stadiwm Glyndŵr, which has a capacity of 22,000. However, the team used to play in the Caerdydd Newydd Stadiwm, with a capacity of 19,500.
