Overview

The Krelvanz army stood at the center of the Krelvanz state, whose citizens trained in the disciplines and honor of a warrior society. Subject to military drill from early manhood, the Krelvanzi became one of the most feared military forces in Strangereal. At the height of Krelvanz's power it was commonly accepted by other nations that "one Krelvanzi was worth several men of any other military".

Referring to Krelvanz as having a "wall of soldiers, instead of bricks", glorious leader Annabelle Weisenhower proposed to reform Krelvanz society to develop a military-focused lifestyle in accordance with "proper virtues" such as equality for all citizens, austerity, strength, and fitness. A Krelvanzi's involvement with the army began in infancy when they were inspected by the local military physician. Any baby judged weak or deformed was categorized and barred from entry into the Krelvanz Military, since the world of the Krelvanz soldiers was no place for those who could not fend for themselves. Those deemed strong could join the Krelvanz military at the age of 12 with parental consent. Under the academies of the Krelvanz the young warriors underwent intense and rigorous military training. Their education focused primarily on cunning, sports and war tactics, but also included poetry, music, academics, and sometimes politics. Those who served a full military service of at least 5 years would be granted full Krelvanz citizenship, with the ability to vote and govern.

Structure

The Krelvanzi are divided into four tiers of service to Krelvanz:

Soldiers are the core of the Krelvanz army: they participated in the most elite government positions and provided the main force in the army. Indeed, they were supposed to be soldiers and nothing else, being forbidden to learn and exercise any other trade. One of the major problems of earlier Krelvanz society was the steady decline in fully enfranchised citizens, which also meant a decline in available military manpower: the number of soldiers decreased from 1,564,132 to 854,298 just before General Weisenhower introduced the Stratocracy system. After citizens were forced to serve before voting or participating in government activity, the Krelvanz Soldier population increased drastically. The Soldier population was subdivided into age groups. The youngest at 12 were counted as weaker due to lack of experience, and the oldest, up to 50 or in a crisis 60, were only called up in an emergency.

Training

At first, education for both sexes was centered on the arts, with the male citizen population later receiving military education. However, after the election of General Weisenhower onwards, the military character of Krelvanz became more pronounced, and education was totally subordinated to the needs of the military.

Both boys and girls were brought up by their parents until the age of seven when they were given from their families and grouped together in "packs" and were sent to what is almost equivalent to present-day military boot camp. They became inured to hardship, being provided with scant food and clothing; this also encouraged them to steal, and if they were caught, they were punished – not for stealing, but for being caught. They were also taught the etiquette and manners of a high and elite image. The Krelvanzi were encouraged to compete against one another in games and mock fights and to foster an esprit de corps. In addition, they were taught to read and write. They learned to read and write not for cultural reasons, but so they could be able to read military maps. At the age of twelve, Krelvanzi was classed as "eligible", as long as their parents signed for further military service. Their physical education was intensified, discipline became much harsher, and they were loaded with extra tasks. The eligible had to go barefoot and were dressed only in a minimal uniform both in summer and in winter.

Adulthood was reached at the age of 18, and the young adult initially served as a trainer for the eligible and younger. At the same time, the most promising youths were included in the Elwood Universal Academy. Those who were rejected retained a lesser form of citizenship, as only the soldiers were ranked among the free. Military duty lasted at least 5 years, but it is heavily encouraged to serve for longer.
