The West Pacifican Vol. 15

Hey New Player!

by Sylven Raithdusk
Before I joined The West Pacific I had never been very involved in a big regional government. To be perfectly frank, I viewed the people in them as an eternally serious (and as a result extremely boring) lot, dedicated to making long pointless speeches and making everyone else feel silly and inconsequential.
That wasn’t the case though.
After working with and getting to know many government officials in TWP, I realized that they are pretty much the same as the rest of us. They make lame jokes and laugh at them anyway, they procrastinate, they make grammar mistakes, they have fun.
But I don’t mean to say our government is a bunch of random lucky people either.
One of the things I admire most about this region is its dedication to the principle of merit. That’s what’s different about the people at the top: they’re the guys and gals who have done stuff.
If you’re a new dude on the block who wants to become a bigshot on NationStates, that might sound a little daunting, but it’s actually pretty exciting. It means that if you put in the effort, you can get anywhere. And this is especially true in The West Pacific.

Ready to start your journey? Here’s a checklist to help you along:
LinkBecome a Citizen!
- This is a big first step; once approved you’ll be able to vote, run for office, and do countless other things reserved for Citizens of TWP.
LinkJoin the Discord!
- Discord is a sleek chatroom where TWP’s community hangs out and the government does a lot of its planning. You probably want to be there.

Get Involved!
Find something that interests you; you can start a program yourself if you have a cool idea, but these are some safe bets:

Be Active
People don’t want you replying to their urgent messages about the new treaty draft three weeks later.

Be Nice
This is a bit subtler – nice can come in many forms – but being considerate towards your fellow players will always go a long way.
I hope you found this article helpful. Keep in mind: you’re capable of anything, especially in The West Pacific. Good luck have fun!

Delegate's Future Plans

by Neenee

Wyvern: Would you mind recounting your history on Nationstates? Show off basically ;p
Neenee: I created my first nation in late 2003 or so and became active in TWP, the GCR where my nation spawned, in 2004. I was part of the constitutional convention after Norion, and was heavily involved in FA, as an ambassador, the deputy, and the head of the ministry. After that, I stuck around in the government, ending up holding the position of Prime Minister for a while. After that, I ended up Vice Delegate under ZetaOne, then Delegate after him. While Delegate, I participated in The West Pacific Dominion. … We couped the region. It lasted maybe 24 hours. Could have held it, but didn’t want to destroy the region to do it. We’d wanted change, not blanket destruction.
After that, and the trial, I was still around, but was in a UCR for a little bit.
I became active in TWP again, which was nice. During that period of activity, I headed The Empire, and, under pseudonyms, we couped TEP. They needed it, we were doing them a service.
RL became a thing and we let TEP go. RL kept being a thing. I popped back around and began participating in Osiris. I took part in a coup there, too. We didn’t hold it long.
RL became a thing. I came back properly around 2 and a half years ago. I was in LWU and actually raided. The Rahl family became established and Rahlspiracy theories started up. Badger convinced me to come back to TWP again, beyond the occasional posting on the RMB, and I became a Guardian. I did drop WA here for a little while, to go participate in Lazarus. That was unpleasant and I realized I should never have left home. I was happy to come back and grateful to be welcomed back again.
And now here I am.

W: How you think that your history has prepared you for this Delegacy?
N: I’ve touched on almost every aspect of running a GCR, I’ve got experience, and I’ve grown so much from when I started. I believe that my history has provided me with the knowledge I need and my growth as a player and as a person has given me the proper temperament.

W: What are your plans moving forward as it relates to each of the Ministries? (Recruitment&Cit, FA. etc.)
N: I haven’t had a chance to yet, because the timing of getting the seat plus RL, but I am going to hit up each Ministry head individually and find out what sort of visions they have for their department (most of which involve “so how do we do more?”). I’ll share what I’d like to see, and we’ll go from there. We’ve had good RMB and Discord activity, but I’d love to see us growing each department, grabbing the new nations and giving them things to do. I’ll work with everyone to find things to do.

This looks like an ordinary cannon, but actually fires any one of twelve types of glitter.

TWPAF Update

by Captain Overthinkers
We could give another report of beaches invaded, natives purged, defender ships sunk. But that’s all standard operating procedure for the pirates. So instead, we’d like to give you all an inside look at some of the new technology we’ve developed under the new Pirate Queen. (The less secret stuff, of course.)

Now, plundering helpless regions’ rum and chocolate under cover of darkness is fun and all, but it’s even more fun when you leave the remains sparkling in the moonlight. To accomplish this, our engineers have been modifying some of our old, unused cannons to launch glitter at high velocity. These cannons, pictured above, can fire a wide range of specially designed glitter formulas—some that light the target on fire, sending sparkling smoke up into the sky, some that spread to cover yards of coastline at once, and some that remain compressed until they strike an enemy ship, drilling a hole and filling their lower decks with glitter. Chervil and Benjabobaria organized outings to test these prototypes, with varied success.

All these weapons of mass beautification are nothing if you can’t get them anywhere. During a global expedition with Osiris recently, our ships were sporting a new boosting mechanism. The engines convert coffee to forward motion, giving an extra bit of speed when the winds get rough. We tried to run the engines with decaf, since there’s tons of it dumped into the waters of TWP going to waste, but that junk couldn’t power a paper boat.

Keep your eyes peeled for sparkling, glittery regions in the coming months. TWPAF will be busy spreading the love, all the while coming up with more ways to send those natives running.

Internal Affairs Update

by Davelands

The goal of Internal Affairs is to increase the activity of the nations in The West Pacific and as the new Minister, I know I have my work cut out for me.

The last Internal Affairs Minister left us in a bad place as he abruptly quit the region and has refused to turn over any of the projects that he was working on. So, we have been forced to go back to square one. My first order of business was to build up a staff, which I was able to do by hiring Kawaii and Fuji as my assistants. Both of them bring a lot of knowledge and energy to the job! More importantly is that the three of us have different areas of expertise which will be reflected in the number of new and different events that are coming.

About those events! As you are already aware, we have been doing our Day events on Discord and the RMB. Each day we change the Discord icon and celebrate the Day Of The Year. It has proven to be a fun event that has people waiting for the change every morning. Along with that, we have been promoting the TWP RMB traditions using the Glitter Gazette. Punday Monday, Haikuesday, Thank You Thursday, and Karaoke Friday are all fun and popular RMB weekly events.

Kawaii has begun work on the Celebrate TWP event! This will have a dedicated website, RMB, Forum, and Discord areas and will focus on the history and culture of the region! Expect an announcement of the date in the near future! In conjunction with that, we will be running a Survivor game (just like the TV show) where a bunch of natives will compete for prizes by being put into tribes and tackling tough challenges.

Fujai is in the process of bringing back the very popular Regional Map! This map will be a new one built for nations who are in the Hall of Nations where you can claim territory and grow your nation over time. He is also working on the Darkpedia, a user-submitted collection of national factbooks. If you need help with anything related to dispatches and factbooks, see Fujai and the rest of the staff on Discord. We can help you out.

Lastly, I have started our NFL Pickem Game just in time for the new NFL season to kick off. At the moment we have 10 people who will be picking 3 games a week for the entire season with the winner getting a special mention on the RMB and control of the regional flag for a week! I will also be running a number of other sports-related events throughout the year.

I think that with all the new and different events that we have planned that the region will be engaged and a fun place to hang out!

Editor’s Note:
A year ago Halo asked me to become the editor of The West Pacifican. I have had a lot of fun trying to fulfill the responsibilities of this position, but I’m now stepping down from the job. Thank you all for having given me this opportunity.

I’m leaving you with two able substitutes: Atlae Isles and Wyvern. Atlae Isles edited and published last month’s paper and Wyvern did absolutely all the staff services for this issue. I am confident in their ability to deliver TWP the news it deserves. Please thank both of them for all their work the next time you see one around!

And farewell… <3
