History
The present area of the pentopolis has seen human habitation of some form for millennia with the oldest remains found yet dating back 120,000 years with genetic testing confirming Hevberian ancestry. It was during the bronze age that saw the Hevberian peoples establish city-states however it wasn't long that these city-states, being at the crossroads of several empires, saw themselves being fought and contested over between the powers of the time such as the Asurians, Babelonians, and Kemgypts all having at some point during the bronze age conquered or vassalized the city-states of the pentopolis of that time.
It was during classical antiquity which saw the Hantenization of the pentopolitean city-states due to the growing influence of the ancient Hantean traders which would eventual conquer the pentopolis and establish themselves as a ruling dynasty of the natives which would see themselves embroiled in war against other powers of Antiquity, passing between the Hantean democractic empires to those of the republican empires. It wouldn't be until the medieval age that the pentopolis would see the fall of the republican empire at the hands of Cyanist, Yellowist, and Violetist crusader armies. Eventually however the crusader states would fall and see the pentopolis under the rule of Yellowist and Violetist empires.
Geography & Climate
The pentopolis sits on the coastal edge of a hot, arid steppe with long hot summers, cool winters, and few rainy days which results in scarce water resources. Waterspouts are known to occur commonly during the changing of seasons but rarely cause damage while F2 tornadoes have occurred albeit rarely. The pentopolis is also situated geographically near to a fault zone which has resulted in catastrophic earthquakes occurring every 400 years on average with destructive earthquakes leading to serious loss of life striking about every 80 years. While stringent construction regulations are in place and recently built structures are earthquake-safe.

Fossil Fuels
The Levianthine oil & gas field is a large oil and natural gas field located within the territorial waters and Economic Exclusive Zone of the pentopolis. It was discovered Tevet, 15771 by the Hyperborean energy company Mass Fusion and is estimated to contain enough oil and natural gas to supply the pentopolis' energy needs for 400 years. Unfortunately the pentopolis lacked the ability to extract these resources at the time of their discovery and the Hamasmonean government leased these rights to foreign companies and extraction of oil and natural gas from the oil field began on Tevet 3, 15780. Despite extraction finally being now possible only a few thousand barrels could be extracted due to the unstable and fickle nature of the Hamasmonean government. However since the Mered on Adar 1, 15784 and the liberation of the pentopolis from the cruelty of the Hamasmoneans oil and gas extraction is able to occur unhindered. Extraction is conducted using unmanned offshore platforms which then pump the oil and gas to shore where it can be processed. Most of the oil and gas extracted is used for the production of oils, plastics, and other chemicals due to the pentopolis getting most of its energy needs met through renewables, the Levianthine oil and gas field acts as an emergency energy reserve. The vast majority of the older, manned offshore platforms have been repurposed into offshore neighborhoods of the five cities where people can live and work.
Hydroelectricity
Hydroelectricity makes up a substantial amount of the pentopolis' power generation. Following the Mered on Adar 1, 15784 the coastal positioning of the pentopolis allowed for the exploitation of coastal currents as well as tidal forces through the use of Marine Current Generators mounted on the seafloor, Tidal Stream Generators, and Wave Energy Converters to extract and convert as much renewable energy from the sea as possible.
The sea is not the only water source from which energy is extracted either. Following the Mered on Adar 1, 1578 the pentopolis, along with aid from foreign investment was able to construct the Yadiazza Dam along the course of the Yadiazza River which served to not only create the Yadiazza Reservoir to help meet the pentopolis' water needs, but to also generate hydroelectricity. Water from the Yadiazza river is also diverted at the dam and sent for use at the pentopolis' nuclear fusion power station. The Hanun river also saw the construction of the Hanun Dam along its course for the generation of hydroelectricity.
Wind
Due to the urban density of the pentopolis the placement of windfarms or even lone wind turbines is difficult and nigh impossible. Despite these challenges the pentopolis has found solutions through the use of offshore windfarms as well as aerial turbine kites tethered to buildings throughout the city.
Solar
Due to the urban density of the pentopolis the placement of solar farms or even lone solar panels is difficult and nigh impossible. Despite these challenges the pentopolis has found solutions through the use of rooftop solar panels atop buildings throughout the city.
Nuclear
The Melam nuclear fusion power and enrichment station is the pentopolis' primary source of energy and the reason that the pentopolis has become a net energy exporter. The Melam power station is situated along the course of the Yadiazza River which supplies coolant water for the facility. The Melam power station is also responsible for the pentopolis' uranium enrichment, using laser enrichment, and plutonium production which takes place in the subterranean levels of the facility and produces weapons grade uranium and plutonium for the pentopolis' nuclear weapons program. Melam Corporation is the pentopolis' electricity utility, responsible for all nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and fossil fuel extraction and exploitation.
Water
The pentopolis is situated along the coastal portion of a hot, arid steppe which as a result means water, especially freshwater can be very hard to come by naturally, the only natural sources of freshwater in the pentopolis being the Yadiazza River, Hanun River, Lake Hilarion, and Lake Amphion. For millennia this has made having enough water for agriculture and survival a constant issue, however even in ancient times the native peoples of the pentopolis have not only managed to survive but thrive on their limited water resources and produce record breaking harvests for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the rule of the Hamasmoneans saw the severe mismanagement of the pentopolis' water resources coupled with a growing, confined population which resulted in droughts, poor harvests, economic ruin, and the deaths of thousands from starvation, dehydration, and heat. Upon the fall of the Hamasmoneans, the Mered, one of the highest priorities of the new government was the restoration of the pentopolis' water supply. This involved the construction of the Yadiazza Hydroelectric Dam for the generation of power and the creation of the Yadiazza Reservoir. However it did not end there as three towering desalination plants would be built along the coast to turn the non-potable saltwater of the sea into clean, freshwater for use in the five cities for drinking and agriculture.
