The Republic of VL is a gargantuan, orderly nation, notable for its free-roaming dinosaurs, frequent executions, and prohibition of alcohol. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 23.092 billion VLians are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The enormous, corrupt, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Education. The average income tax rate is 81.3%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient VLian economy, worth a remarkable 2,390 trillion Golds a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, quite specialized black market in Arms Manufacturing, Tourism, and Information Technology. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 103,528 Golds, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Citizens with artificial limbs are forbidden to serve as beauty pageant judges, armed security details escort librarians to their homes, women don't report crimes to the emergency services for fear of being arrested, and military barracks resemble five-star hotels. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. VL's national animal is the Elephant, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.
