The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 3.686 billion Sonneners are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The large, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized government prioritizes Defense, with Law & Order, Administration, and Industry also on the agenda, while International Aid and Spirituality are ignored. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of El-Divervia. The average income tax rate is 74.7%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient Sonnenerieo economy, worth 459 trillion Sottas a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. Hiding wrinkles with make-up is illegal, people think "siege mentality" is a positive trait, all citizens are solely referenced by their allocated identity number, and heavily-armed commandos play rock-paper-scissors over whether to execute criminals and foreign visitors. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Vervian Desire's national animal is the Golden Eagle, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies, and its national religion is Imperialis.
