The Republic of Venice is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed population of 23.326 billion Venetians have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The enormous government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Education, and Welfare. The average income tax rate is 53.9%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The large but inefficient Venetian economy, worth 605 trillion lire a year, is quite specialized and led by the Furniture Restoration industry, with significant contributions from Basket Weaving, Book Publishing, and Beef-Based Agriculture. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 25,949 lire, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.2 times as much as the poorest.

Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed, the tenet of free speech is held dear, the government is seen to favor Catholics, and a well-funded social safety net protects the unfortunate. Crime is almost non-existent, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Venice's national animal is the lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

Venice is ranked 109,078^th in the world and 3^rd in Italian Regions for Highest Drug Use, scoring 68.4 on the Pineapple Fondness Rating.
