Vietnam or Viet Nam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam, [vîət nāːm]), officially the United Republic of Vietnam, is the eastern-most country on the Indochina Peninsula. The country borders China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the southwest, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia through the South China Sea, and Thailand through the Gulf of Thailand. It has a unitary parliamentary republican government which sits in Hanoi which has been the capital since 1945. Saigon is the largest and most populous city.

Evidences of human inhabitation in Vietnam traced back as far as the Paleolithic age. Văn Lang and Âu Lạc were the first ever Vietnamese states. The Han dynasty annexed northern and central Vietnam from 111 BC and was put under Chinese rule for over 1000 years until independence was restored in 939 after the Battle of Bạch Đằng River and the creation of Đại Việt (Great Viet) kingdom. Vietnam went through multiple dynasties such as Lý, Trần, Lê and expanded southward into the Mekong Delta and Champa. Infightings emerged in the 16th century and divided the country into two halves governed under Trịnh and Nguyễn lords. The Tây Sơn brothers reunified the country and ruled the country for a short time until Nguyễn Ánh took over and started the Nguyễn dynasty. France slowly eroded the country's independence and turned it into a colony starting from the mid-19th century until the Nguyễn surrendered completely in 1883.

The August Revolution of 1945 led by the nationalist Việt Minh under the leadership of Hồ Chí Minh put an end to the colonial period and the dynasty. Following the intense Vietnam Civil War between factions in Việt Minh, the Republic of Vietnam was established. The country then went under a major economic and social transformation dubbed Thời kì Đổi mới (The Renovation Era). The authoritarian regime of Chancellor Nguyễn Trần Phú executed radical social and economic reforms that started a long period of rapid economic growth, industrialization, urbanization, and modernization which transformed Vietnam into an industrialized high-middle income nation near the end of the 70s. After the death of Trần Phú in 1985, the country went into a period of political instability and coups which culminated in the democratization of the government and establishment of the United Republic of Vietnam. The economy suffered a real estate bubble burst as a result of the 1997 Asian financial crisis which prompted major financial reforms but quickly recovered. Vietnam remained neutral throughout the Cold War but has started to align with the West in contemporary time due to the growing influence of China.

In the 21st century, Vietnam is a great power with a strong high-income export-driven economy; it has one of the world's largest economy by nominal GDP. Vietnam's economy focuses greatly on high-tech, information technology, electronics, and machine building. It is a developed country with a stable and transparent democracy with the best freedom of expressions in the region, high standard of living, an elaborative social safety net with universal health care, free public education up to tertiary level, and strong environmental protection.

Vietnam was a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and is currently a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
