The Thermocracy of Thermostat is a gargantuan, safe nation, renowned for its state-planned economy, devotion to social welfare, and stringent health and safety legislation. The democratic population of 44.883 billion Thermostatians enjoy great social freedoms and frequent elections, where the majority of the populace regularly votes to increase its benefits at the expense of various hapless minorities.

The enormous, moralistic, socially-minded, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Healthcare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 70.5%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The large but stagnant Thermostatian economy, worth 684 trillion hot flashes a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient, highly specialized black market in Furniture Restoration, Cheese Exports, Information Technology, and Retail. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 15,250 hot flashes, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

The government is avowedly atheist. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Thermostat's national animal is the hot dog, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

Thermostat is ranked 1st in the world and 1st in Mercury for Lowest Crime Rates, with zero law-abiding acts per hour.
