The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 4.883 billion Cyborgs are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The medium-sized, corrupt, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Administration, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Machine City. The average income tax rate is 49.4%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The powerhouse Mechalusian economy, worth 447 trillion nuts and bolts a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, and Door-to-door Insurance Sales. Black market activity is frequent. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 91,687 nuts and bolts, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.5 times as much as the poorest.

The jackhammer is considered a tool of artistic criticism, trespassers entering The Hivemind's office are immediately vaporized, subsidisation of Big Pharma has stopped many corporate executives from having to sell their second homes, and judges are all-powerful. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. The Mechalus's national animal is the Heisenbug, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Collectivism.
