History of Elas

Elas is an inhabited planet found within the Tellun star system in the Alpha Quadrant. This is the homeworld of the Elasians, a spacefaring humanoid species. This system is located in an area near the Federation-Klingon border. Elasians possessed relatively primitive sublight spacecraft technology that were powered by nuclear propulsion units.

Prior to the visit by the USS Enterprise in 2268, Federation scientists had studied the culture of the Elasians. By that year, the Elasians had been waging a long war with the neighboring Troyians and both planets had reached the capability of mutual destruction. The wedding of the Dohlman of Elas, Elaan, to the ruler of Troyius was to preserve the peace. The Elasian government included a Council of Nobles, and great homage and deference was paid to their royal Dohlman.

In the 23rd century, Elasian males were likened by Federation scientists as "vicious and arrogant" in initial reports. The females, while equally savage, were "supposed to be something very special" having "a kind of subtle, mystical power that drives men wild." The Elasians considered themselves a warrior people, and held little regard for the relatively gentle culture of their neighbors on Troyius. They prided themselves on their interrogation techniques. Males were about a head taller than Humans and Vulcans. Females had the ability to produce tears that upon contact made men became enthralled by the woman who infected them.

Dilithium crystals, considered by the Elasians to be rather common stones, are abundant on the planet. The Klingon Empire had become aware of the Elasian dilithium deposits by 2268, and held the secret closely while they argued with the Federation over jurisdiction of the Tellun system.

In 2369, when shown his guest quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-D by Ensign Kane, Montgomery Scott reminisced to him about the time that the Dohlman of Elas was transported aboard the earlier Enterprise. He remembered her whining and complaining about the quarters.
