The German Region of Phasonia is a massive, cultured nation, ruled by Prussian Leadership with a fair hand, and notable for its rum-swilling pirates, punitive income tax rates, and stringent health and safety legislation. The compassionate, democratic, devout population of 2.781 billion Phasonians love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The government — a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, outspoken morass — juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Education, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Fasburg. The average income tax rate is 81.2%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The Phasonian economy, worth 150 trillion Lernics a year, is quite specialized and led by the Basket Weaving industry, with significant contributions from Information Technology, Cheese Exports, and Woodchip Exports. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 54,035 Lernics, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Producers insist that movie stars wear crash helmets in every scene, workers can choose whether they prefer offices that smell of pungent body odor or whale vomit, the government is hoping that medical aid will speak louder than human rights abuses, and out-of-work basketball players loom over the unemployment line. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Phasonia's national animal is the Phasonian Dove, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies, and its national religion is Phasonian Violetism.
