The Martian Confederacy of Marimaia is a gargantuan, efficient nation, ruled by First Chancellor Amelia Zhang with an iron fist, and remarkable for its ubiquitous missile silos, frequent executions, and public floggings. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical, cheerful population of 39.428 billion Martians enjoy great individual freedoms in everything except elections, which, where they exist at all, are populist shams for a dictatorship government that has no intention of ever giving up power.

Scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, the automotive industry soaks up huge government handouts, in a fit of passion First Chancellor Amelia Zhang has shredded thirty years' worth of petitions, and the nationalistic national anthem inspires citizens to literally spit at foreigners. Crime, especially youth-related, is well under control. Marimaia's national animal is the Marimaian Lion, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its national religion is Martian Catholic Church.
