The Protectorate of Maerist is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by Desmotrek the Wise with an iron fist, and remarkable for its sprawling nuclear power plants, irreverence towards religion, and devotion to social welfare. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 1.836 billion Maeristians are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The medium-sized, corrupt, well-organized government is primarily concerned with Education, with Industry, Administration, and Healthcare also on the agenda, while Spirituality isn't funded at all. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Ellison. The average income tax rate is 46.8%, but much higher for the wealthy.

10-year-olds who struggle with integrating by parts are considered slow learners, the state considers itself the 'third parent' of every child in the nation, the government only announces the deaths of its members when it's convenient, and 'Police Academy 36' and 'Sharknados On A Plane' are vying for top spot at the box-office. Crime is totally unknown. Maerist's national animal is the dolphin, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its national religion is Agnosticism.
