The People's Republic of Katonia is a very large, orderly nation, notable for its state-planned economy, compulsory military service, and irreverence towards religion. The hard-nosed, cynical population of 160 million Katonians are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The enormous, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Education. The average income tax rate is 66.4%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but inefficient Katonian economy, worth 6.06 trillion Piecors a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector, which is quite specialized, is led by the Trout Farming industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Uranium Mining. Average income is 37,888 Piecors, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.0 times as much as the poorest.

Homes have been banned from having any more than one wheel, midnight raids drag couples from their homes in the name of decency, ghost regiments exist only on paper, and the navy is chrome-plating its battleships to prevent rust. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a very well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Katonia's national animal is the Owl, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.
