The Free Land of Josephree is a huge, efficient nation, notable for its pith helmet sales, public floggings, and complete absence of social welfare. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 334 million Josephreeans are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The minute, corrupt, pro-business, well-organized government, or what there is of one, is effectively ruled by the Department of Industry, although Healthcare, Defense, and Administration are also considered important, while Law & Order and International Aid are ignored. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 2.9%.

The frighteningly efficient Josephreean economy, worth 37.3 trillion metals a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Gambling industry, with significant contributions from Retail, Arms Manufacturing, and Uranium Mining. Average income is an impressive 111,761 metals, but there is a vast disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 1,014,498 per year while the poor average 1,427, a ratio of 710 to 1.

City workers have declared that rolling markets aren't good for business after all, it is technically inaccurate to call the dead 'worm food', the government has adopted a more thrifty attitude to administrating the country's needs, and sales of superhero insurance have skyrocketed after the government abandoned the police in favor of vigilantes. Crime, especially youth-related, is all-pervasive, perhaps because of the country's complete lack of prisons. Josephree's national animal is the feral cat, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
