The Attack on the Imperial Palace, known to its planners as Operation: SURGEON-9188, was the first and only battle of the Augustan Treason, an armed conflict between those loyal to Augustus, who had declared himself as Emperor, and those loyal to Haisan Uluvan, who had declared Augustus' claim to be Emperor null and issued a call for his overthrow. The initial battle was, however, overshadowed by Operation RETURN, which saw first the return of Alastair Thana - by the end of the battle declared Supreme Commander of the Imperial Armed Forces - and, of even more importance, Emperor Nicholas, to the material universe: as allies, instead of as foes.

Though initially concieved of as an operation to overthrow a corrupt, treasonous, ruler - an upstart seeking to replace the Eternal Emperor; the battle transformed into a scene out of prophecy. The arch-traitor, Alastair, returning to the mortal universe to ensure Emperor Nicholas regained his throne was nothing short of astonishing. Indeed, the Imperial troops - led by Haisan Uluvan - refused to believe it; with Haisan himself personally engaging Alastair in combat, though being defeated handily. Only the execution of Augustus, and the timely intervention of Emperor Nicholas himself, saved their fight from becoming lethal. A battle that had begun to wipe away the stain of treason, ended with the return of Nicholas to his rightful place, at the head of the greatest Empire the universe had ever seen.

Background

The Battle of Tycon had ended the Insurrection Wars in an Imperial victory: but not without terrible cost. Much of the old Imperial administration was dead, the Emperor himself had given his life to remove the vile traitor Alastair Thana from the material universe, and for the first time in its history the Empire was poorer at the end of a conflict than it was at the beginning. Only Retribution Command, a rag-tag formation of Imperial Loyalists - from the most fanatic of Radicals to those more moderate that had been dragged along with them - remained to truly rebuild the Irenton Empire in the wake of the crushing wars.

Haisan Uluvan, Lord Emperor's Executioner, adopted son of Emperor Nicholas, and leader of Retribution Command, was many things: charismatic, utterly loyal, with an iron will, and incredible fighting ability; yet, he was, of course, not an administrator: he was a soldier, trained to fight and if necessary die for the Empire, but not to manage an economy that covered thousands of galaxies and their inhabitants. What was worse is that he knew this - Haisan came to doubt himself and often preferred to delegate his authority, even when he was certain he was correct - and he made such knowledge clear to many in the recovering Imperial administration. What grew right under Haisan's nose - even under his indirect protection - was the so-called "New Faction," who sought to undo many of Haisan's reforms, and even - secretly - the Imperial system as a whole.

Once, the most Radical of Imperial officers drew up plans for a coup against Haisan - in the event he declared himself Emperor; then, on the first day of the Month of Fire, 9125, Haisan gave his final speech, to an in-person crowd of millions - with countless trillions more watching from afar. It was fairly innocuous, detailing his plans to resign, his faith in the Imperial leadership, his thanks to his old comrades in arms - who watched tearfully, pained that they had thought so ill of Haisan as to believe he was anything but the Emperor's most humble and loyal servant - and what he viewed were the tasks of the incoming Imperial administration. Once, they planned a coup to keep him from the throne - then, they started planning one to give it to him. The watching populace had to be held back by armed Fusiliers, such was the popular anguish at seeing their beloved leader go; Executioner, High Commander, Soldier, Servant, Friend - then, he was gone, as though he was never there.

The New Imperial Administration, who Haisan had laid the groundwork for, were the opposite of what the Old Faction Radicals wished them to be. They were strongly reactionary, reversing many of Haisan's reforms, and proved themselves to be closed-minded and elitist - as well as unwilling to progress the will of the departed Emperor Nicholas. The Old Faction grumbled, but cooler heads, and the lack of Haisan in frontline politics, prevented them from going further.
