The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 1.684 billion Griddies are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The medium-sized, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Education, Defense, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Cell 8. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 69.0%.

The all-consuming Griddian economy, worth 252 trillion Times a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is an enormous, deeply entrenched, quite specialized black market in Information Technology, Arms Manufacturing, Cheese Exports, and Tourism. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 149,917 Times, with the richest citizens earning 5.6 times as much as the poorest.

Bug burgers are extra crunchy, rebuilding efforts for a recently destroyed cathedral aren't expected to be completed for another century, it is illegal to carry an umbrella when the official weather forecast predicts a sunny day, and home renovation projects take decades to complete. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Grid 32's national animal is the Cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its national religion is P-san-ism.
