The hard-nosed, cynical, cheerful, devout population of 26.409 billion Cartigans are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The medium-sized, corrupt, well-organized government prioritizes Defense, with Education, Administration, and Environment also on the agenda, while Social Policy and International Aid are ignored. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Ronbertburg. The average income tax rate is 90.2%, and even higher for the wealthy.

Antacids top everyone's Maxxmas list, doctors will keep brain-dead coma patients ventilated for years in order to avoid accusations of allowing people to die, it's harder to qualify for IVF than for a good university, and the beauty of coastal towns is marred only slightly by all the closed-down storefronts. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Cartiga's national animal is the Hairbuster Riberts, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its national religion is Gottgläubigkeit.
