The Republic of Card Vault is a colossal, orderly nation, ruled by Valint and Balk with an iron fist, and notable for its pith helmet sales, frequent executions, and absence of drug laws. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical, humorless, devout population of 9.507 billion Collectors are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.

The relatively small, corrupt, moralistic, pro-business, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Defense, and Law & Order. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Vault One. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 28.0%.

The frighteningly efficient Collecting economy, worth a remarkable 1,632 trillion cards a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with major contributions from Retail, Information Technology, and Automobile Manufacturing. Black market activity is rampant. Average income is an impressive 171,671 cards, but there is a vast disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 1,208,929 per year while the poor average 8,256, a ratio of 146 to 1.

Rupert Bear is considered to be the most risqué TV programme in Card Vault, government popup ads are springing up like weeds, everyone apparently sends Valint and Balk hair-filled lockets, offers to die heroically, and poetic desires to co-parent a child, and cheese lovers have a case of the bleus. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force. Card Vault's national animal is the deck, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Corporatism.
