The Democratic Republic of Arellistan is a massive, safe nation, ruled by Zain al-Jalil with an iron fist, and notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, prohibition of alcohol, and parental licensing program. The hard-nosed, cynical population of 4.918 billion Arelli are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The large, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Khasut. The average income tax rate is 72.1%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The Arelli economy, worth 394 trillion Arelli Rials a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, quite specialized black market in Arms Manufacturing, Trout Farming, Uranium Mining, and Woodchip Exports. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. The new Arelli-made OS is buggier and more inconvenient than a horse-drawn carriage, most academic research has ground to a halt, the government has become increasingly militant, and women tell their friends they've been on crash diets rather than admit they were pregnant and have had terminations. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Arellistan's national animal is the Usean Cobra, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Zawasul.

Arellistan is ranked 36,367^th in the world and 66^th in Commonwealth of Sovereign States for Largest Black Market, with 48.3 trillion Standard Monetary Units.
